Canada is a bit of a "black sheep" in regard to cartography which is no fault of their own. It is simply the vast amount of coast line in relation to population / tax dollars which makes cartography expensive to keep up to date. How this relates to MX Mariner is that it makes licensing the data too expensive to be usable for customers simply wanting a toy on their cell phone. For example, the new (1.3.25) release of MX Mariner includes UKHO chart regions. Unlike the free NOAA chart downloads in MX Mariner the UKHO chart regions will be approximately $5 USD each. I believe $5 to be reasonable. Similar Canadian regions would be 10x that plus. I don't think sailors should have to pay twice for cartography they've already purchased. So, the solution is to create a tool that will import BSB4 charts using your PC to the MX Mariner optimized format. This way you can bring cartography you already own into MX Mariner. I do plan on continually expanding the downloadable chart regions in MX Mariner also as a convenience. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of various Hydro offices as to the cost.

I've been working with CHS directly in regard to BSB4. They have been very helpful. I expect to have a BSB4 import tool available this summer.

Lol. I'm in Australia. And we have better sailing weather, to make things worse.

Will,
what would it take to make this type of agreements extensible to OpenCPN?

UKHO is very accommodating. An interested party would have to contact them and request permission to distribute their data. UKHO will require you to encrypt their data. Some considerable development work will need to be put into bringing the data to OpenCPN in a secure way in the form of a plugin. That said, I think the best avenue for OpenCPN would be to use BSB4 and the BSB4 plugin. Of course, Linux users like myself would be left in the woods until BSB4 is brought to Linux.

There is also S63 which is simply S57 data but encrypted. The S63 encryption is documented somewhere online by IHO... you may have to look on archive.org . I believe it is blowfish. S63 could be brought to OpenCPN I believe relatively easily by an interested developer.

Re: Android Development Underway

If anyone here has downloaded a UKHO chart region in MX Mariner, I'd like to hear from you. I'm interested to know if the download speeds are ok and any other feedback. The MX Mariner chart region (portfolio) distribution server is in California. So, I'm interested to know how it performs accross the pond or if I'm going to need to invest in an additional server in the EU.

Thanks,

Will

I will do this now, I never heard that you got UKHO charts til now. I've been waiting since your app came out :-)

Yes, server definitely seems slow. I should be getting 4-5Mb/s but it's at 5% now!

I'm now at 55%. I doubt your server bandwidth is max out or something as that should take about 2 minutes on my connection

I suspected as much. I'll take a look at setting up a chart region distribution mirror. Thanks a lot for the valuable info.

Re: Android Development Underway

I'm not up on server stuff much but I would have thought that the speed should be the same as someone in the USA, just the latency would be more for me?? But thanks for the great program, I'm putting this on my nexus 7 now.

MX Mariner is in the Google Play Store.

Should work fine on a Note 2.

Re: Android Development Underway

I published MX Tides 1.0beta which is available on Google Play free.

MX Tides features the latest xtide code and NOAA tide and current harmonics processed by David Flater. MX Tides also includes tide harmonics for the United Kingdom processed in 2010.

Features:
  • No Ads
  • Free as in no cost and free as in open source
  • Simple and easy to use interface
  • 100% offline use including map

MX Tides is an Android port of Xtide by David Flater. Both are GPL.

XTide: Harmonic tide clock and tide predictor

Future features:
  • I plan on MX Mariner and MX Tides working together at some point in the future once MX Tides gets past the beta stage.
  • Include reliable harmonics for more areas
If anyone know of harmonics available for additional areas please let me know. I'm aware of WXTide32. However, the harmonics are unreliable.

Thanks for giving her a spin. Measurements in statute only right now. But metric is a must have feature. I will add it soon.
