Re: Android Port ?

Nuticharts Lite is a good alternative for now, but I think an Open Source chartplotter for Android would be a good thing.

I'm not sure what Nutiteq's future plans are but they're giving this version away for free (although offline use is a paid feature, and for serious navigation use offline would be required.)

Apparently they make their map api and source available for free for GPL-licensed software. So in theory OpenCPN or an alternate GPL system could use this SDK as a starting point. That is if they'd agree to that....

Re: Android Port ?

Yes Michael the Panasonic Tough Pad is good, but, at $1,000 I would hate to see it slip overboard, the the ViewSonic and a bunch of other 7" or 10" tablets are all falling in price under $200 and downwards, all can go into a plastic zip lock bag with a chunk of poly, you have to comprise on Processors speeds / memory / HD ports they are tough choices, one problem solved, you can get a 12v car charger to go into the boats supply, wow the hardware is getting there at a price I can afford.

Re: Android Port ?

I have to say, having a Toughbook CF52, they are tough. Mine has lasted over two years and seems to be going strong. It's taken more then one leap across the saloon in a seaway. Most people say budget a new laptop every two years in a marine environment. I hope to get a couple more then that.

Re: Android Port ?

I would be happy to join any developers who are or wish to port opencpn to android. Its going to be a long haul but we have a great code base for starting. Also, IMHO the real effort will be porting the various map formats and algorithms, Android will pretty much force us to stay inline with GUI presentation (and no bad thing either I guess). Anyway, if anbody can steer me towards such a group of developers I would be delighted.
