Autonomous Boat Simulator

I'm sorry if I'm asking about a problem that's already been solved but...

I'm developing control software for an autonomous boat. I'd like to use OpenCPN as though my simulated boat was a real boat. I'm thinking I'll generate GPS coordinates of my simulated boat and feed in some other data for other boats I'm trying to avoid.

If someone could point me in the right direction I'd be much obliged.
