Best Computer Configuration for Optimal Use of Open CPN

I'm new to Open CPN
So new that I have not yet download the software

I'm about to buy a new laptop, or notebook before downloading it and starting using it.

I've made a search on the forum to see what will be the best computer configuration for an optimal use of OpenCpn. But to no effect.
So please excuse me if that question has been on the forum already many a time.

So what will be the best configuration in term of:

-Ram Memory
-graphic cards (which one answer best with the charts )
etc..

Thank you

Alec

None of these will matter much, as OCPN is not a resource hog. You can comfortably use a low-end hardware. Areas I would prioritise:
- low power consumption,
- high resolution, daylight readable display,
- rugged construction.

Personally I use an old, second hand Toughbook CF-18 and find it OK.

OK Thanks a lot
I was under the impression that it would not work well with some graphic cards and taht it needed quite a lot of RAM to be able to follow the movement of the boat during navigation.

Do you mean that it doesn't work on Windows 7?

Re: Best Computer Configuration for Optimal Use of Open CPN

The next version of OpenCPN will come with support for OpenGL. This is already available in the 2.6 beta series of releases. While OpenCpn will continue to work with the traditional screen rendering, if you want the extra performance and eye candy that OpenGL offers, the hardware is important. For a summary check OpenGL | Official OpenCPN Homepage. Also check the different 2.6 beta threads regarding performance on various hardware.

Once again, OpenCPN will work as usual without OpenGL support.

Re: Best Computer Configuration for Optimal Use of Open CPN

I haven't used very extensively. Mainly in testing phase myself. I have installed on a couple computers.

Computer 1: Win7 and (if booted from external drive) Linux (Fedora)
Computer 2: Linux (Ubuntu)

They seem to work out pretty good once configured. I also have the Android version on a tablet. Again, still testing phase but so far it works pretty good.

I haven't had any real problems with Win7 64 bit with the stable release. Having a problem with the latest beta, but that's a different story.

Re: Best Computer Configuration for Optimal Use of Open CPN

as opencpn even works with 10-year old hardware ( on my boat with a pentium 800 processor and onboard graphic card )
it should work with any net or notebook from today

Re: Best Computer Configuration for Optimal Use of Open CPN

On the boat, I run it on a 6+ year old bottom of the line Dell laptop with no dedicated graphics card under Windows XP. It runs fine. I recommend at least 2 GB of RAM if you're doing to use vector (ENC) charts.

I also run it on a couple modern laptops under Win 7 64bit and it also runs just fine.
