Beta 5.5.0 crashes for macOS CoreDuo machines

The new beta 5.5.0 still crashes with macOS CoreDuo machines as always before.

Re: Beta 5.5.0 crashes for macOS CoreDuo machines

If this listing of the Macs with Intel Core 2 Duo
https://everymac.com/systems/by_proc...-duo-macs.html
is right, the the youngest of those machines are from early 2012. Discontinued since more than 9 years.

How many of those are active still? If you know the source of the fault, then it might be perhaps easy to correct it. However invest efforts into very outdated hardware does not look like an interesting priority...

Fortunately these Mac machines last longer than any others and also gets free updates of their operating system. So people still use them and don't buy new ones. That is the difference between a Mac machine which is of course more expensive and any other brand. But I am not sure if the crashes results of the CPUs or simply of older macOS versions. However there are several people claiming about crashes with Core2Duo machines. See also:

Some of these people told me they don't want to update the OS. For others I have compiled a special version of OCPN and it has worked for them. The crash logs are all the same: Something went wrong with SVG files and cairo lib.

And that "something" will not even be attempted to be addressed until the next dependencies update, which of course will result in required rebuild of the whole 3rd party plugin ecosystem. Period.

I have done already. My own version does not crash.

There appear to be about 6 posts at least partially on topic.
The rest appear to be sniping.

8 posts deleted for cause or for quoting a deleted post.
Normally I would email each member, not today.

Knock it off guys or the thread will be closed permanently.

Beta 5.5.0 crashes for macOS CoreDuo machines

I can confirm I still use a mid-2012 MacBook Pro laptop and mid-2012 Mac Mini. This last OS update is the first update that “outdates” me, so I’m stuck on Catalina, which is fine with me. I put multi-terabyte SSDs in them and maxed out RAM. They both still perform very well. I just put a new battery in the MaxBook Pro.

I have installed Raspberry Pi 4’s on board for a SignalK server and because I can easily power them with 12 volt transformers, eliminating my need for an inverter as required for the Macs. The Pi’s are great, but the Macs still blow them away with speed and performance across the board. I prefer to sit at the table and SSH into the Pi or admin SignalK from my laptop rather than stand at the Nav station.

I hope my old macs last another 10 years!

You don't need an inverter to power the Mac. I use a 12 volt charging device with the magsafe connector for the MacBook since many years now. Because the newer MacBook Air of my wife has the USB-C connector now I bought recently an adapter from Magsafe to USB-C.

The Mini does. Which is funny, because they are 12volt naturally (or at least they were). My old 2007 mini had an external power supply that was easily eliminated on board a boat. But the “newer” model moved the power supply inside the already confined space making it not-so-easy to “fix.”
