gravosa ...

it is simply a matter of having the quilting enabled (in your stable version) or not (in your beta version) - see: Chart Quilting | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Re: Beta Test / Technical

While creating a route for a race in the Beta version, I got the question if I want connect a route point to the nearest object (sorry, did not write down the exact message). I thought that might be handy, however after trying to insert an extra route point, it added that route point to the latest route point instead of inserting it to the I clicked on. A feature that works very well when not choosing 'connect to the nearest object'.

Anyone with similar experiences?

Beta Version: This is a current version of software development.
Stable version: This version of sofware that has been tested and has no known bug. Thus, it is possible to have confidence in the functioning of the software.

Beta cart: It didn "t make sense. neither stable chart.

But there are charts that are not perfect and for which glitches can occur. This is true of certain versions of the maps that CM93 "found" on the web.

Best regards

Re: Beta Test / Technical

Thankyou.
For now I will try the Stable Version of the software. But I do use CM93. A version I have had for a few years and used with MaxSea.

Question Re: Beta Test / Technical

Hi, I have installed Version 2.4.412 Build 2011-04-12 on a PC with Vista, and noticed the following - more or less (in?)accurately described:

-It works fine with most .KAP charts (Pacific NW region)
-at some time I must have overwritten some of the corresponding .BSB files in such a way as to produce a mismatch between the .KAP and the .BSB (this is still not exactly clear to me, but that's my best guess).
-OpenCPN then crashes, with an error message (sorry, I didn't write it down), when attempting to open *only* those somehow corrupted .KAPs .
-when restarting OpenCPN, it remembers where it was before, tries to open the same corrupted .KAPs, and so it crashes again.
-when performing a re-install, it still remembers the previous settings and so it crashes again.
-only after uninstall and reinstall, with default settings, I can identify the corrupted .KAPs *one at a time* (when crashing), then uninstall and reinstall again.

I am thinking there must be a better way, say if a crash occurs (getting an error message), then discard the last setting and revert to the last known good state, or a default state? ..or something else, along the line of graceful degradation when exposed to unusual situations.

Anyway, I stumbled over this issue after trying out some new charts. Apart from this , I found the software to be... awesome? (oh yes ) and I will do what I can to help.

Fair winds,
Dan

Re: Beta Test / Technical

Dan,
OpenCPN should definitely not crash in such a situation, so
1) Try with the latest beta
2) Provide us with your logfile
3) Provide us with sample KAP causing problems

To save you the reinstalling, it's enough to modify your ini file manually. Find a line like
Code:
VPLatLon="   18.4747,  -64.3659"
and change the position to something out of the problematic chart or simply delete the line.

How to find the log and ini file is described at the bottom of Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage

I installed 2.4.523 beta and things improved; it appears that it's no longer necessary to either modify the .ini file, or to uninstall/reinstall, in order to recover from the crash ( but it still crashes when attempting to open a certain .KAP - see bellow)

Here is the relevant section; it does initialize all .KAPs on location, but when selecting "reg1.kap" it crashes. I notice there is no reg1.BSB available - maybe that is the problem. But the file reg1.kap opens and displays OK in SeaClearII.

Gilletarom.
On the net are quite recent versions (latest is Jan 2011!) floating around for free download. Don't know who does those updates - but I always compare the areas where I plan to sail with the updated navionics on my iPhone, and have never seen changes not included.
My friend went cruising south along the Portugese coast this spring and he noticed, as he was entering Figuera de Foz, that the north mole was a lot longer than shown on his 2010 Navionics chart (C120). In fact it cuts the leading line in half and was still being made.
The CM93 had been corrected and showed the mole in it's new, correct, possition. The date on the chart shows january 2011.

Re: Beta Test / Technical

The CM93 charts I have seen running on the opencpn have every bit as much detail as my own raymarineC80 running whatever it is C80s run on.

Re: Beta Test / Technical

CM93 are absolutely up to date in France
But even if you don't read French take a look at the screenshots (near the bottom of the page) at
Hisse Et Oh - Equipements : Navionics et OpenCPN ?
comparing Google Earth views and boat traces in south Turkey, where the CM93 are based on old obsolete surveys...scary

But enclosed you find my desktop data: prob5 desktop.gpx. Here you see only minor time gaps fi at 15:35. Why?? This is in contast with the file prob7 battery - screen off 930 - 1100.gpx where there is a gap at 9:40 and no points are appended after 10:18 even if I stopped the file at 11:00.
For test purposes it would be fine if there was the possibility to have a real once a minute data appending.
I also use the program WaypointsGPS on my eeepc 900 and enclosed is the file prob8..... here you see at a glance that the system is working.
I shall try again on the boat and let you now how it works in real.
Aart

I tried tracking at sea and every timestamp was OK.
So no problems anymore. I upgraded to 2.5 and that worked great too!
