Can you retrieve data after crash?

A friend has asked me on 18 March ..

"Today, the laptop crashed during our passage- we didnt realize that it wasnt plugged in, and didnt notice that the battery was getting low and so it eventually died!! It caused some problems and it was necessary to do a system restore (from March 11). unfortunately we were behind in backing up our track and so it is gone. Do you know if its possible to retrieve it from somewhere in the background of the opencpn program?"

Any ideas?

Thanks, Terry

Re: Can you retrieve data after crash?

Terry...
I'm afraid the system restore returns the whole contents of the disk to the state it was in when the snapshot was taken. It means all the newer data are gone for good.
In case I'm wrong, all they can do is look in the OpenCPN's data folder and carefully examine the navobj.xml.* files.

Thanks for that Pavel ... how do you open the .xml files?

They are text, so you can use any text editor, even Notepad will kind of work if they are not too big.

Terry,

The program I use to edit OpenCPN xml and gpx files is a "structured text editor" used by programmers, but it works on everything using "Open With" without any tweeking. It is free and very small to download, and runs on Win-anything.

Scintilla and SciTE

I have a copy if you have trouble downloading.

Your friends should look in the OpenCPN data folder and try to find the navobj.xml (.1, .2, .3, which are older and older backups of your primary file, which is navobj.xml). You CAN just rename navobj.xml to something .gpx and pretty much install it as a temporary layer and OpenCPN, to look over what's there, without editing the raw text.
