Can't install 5.2.4

Hi,

I have some cruising coming up and thought I might upgrade my OpenCPN installation. I have been using 4.4.0 under Windows 10 for about five years and once I got over some configuration hurdles, it has worked pretty much flawlessly. No such luck, yet anyway, with 5.2.4. Just getting the installer downloaded was a bit of a challenge with all the new layers of security that have been added to Windows 10. Then, once I got the installer downloaded, I couldn't launch it. I got an "Installer integrity check has failed" message along with the suggestion that maybe the download wasn't fully complete or that the file was damaged.

Anyone else have this issue and get around it? Any thoughts from the experts for a fix or work around? Windows wants me to contact the installer's author to "obtain a new copy." I'm guessing the copy I already have is the latest and greatest. On the off chance the problem actually was a corrupted download, I tried the download three times. Same thing each time.

Thanks.

Re: Can't install 5.2.4

There is no problem with the installer on Windows 10 as far as I can tell, so, as weird as it might sound to you, check whether the sha256 checksum really is c2c16269b5c222886c2fb28640d900af2e816c943b80c97ea2 98239062834626 as stated on the download page, and if it is not, download again.
To check the SHA256 checksum, open the Command Prompt from the start menu and run
Code:
certutil -hashfile "Downloads\opencpn-msvc_5.2.4+2446.6b314e6_setup.exe" SHA256
Which should return this in case your downloaded installer is OK:
Code:
SHA256 hash of Downloads\opencpn-msvc_5.2.4+2446.6b314e6_setup.exe:
c2c16269b5c222886c2fb28640d900af2e816c943b80c97ea298239062834626
CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

The test completed fine, but the checksums didn't match. So I repeated the download about six more times with various browsers and checked each of those. Same thing. For what it might be worth, the checksums didn't match each other either.

All your downloads were broken then, each in a different way, which is completely normal as the probablility each fails exactly the same way is next to none.
All we can suggest is to either keep trying until you get a complete good download confirmed by having a correct checksum or try downloading using a different connection, perhaps even on a different machine.

Switch off your antivirous before downloading, that could be the cause of it.
Good luck.

Re: Can't install 5.2.4

Got sidetracked there for a few days. Thanks for the tips. I'll give it some more tries.

I have to say though, I haven't faced an issue like this since the days of dial up. It seems odd to have downloaded hundreds of large files through this broadband connection, and onto this particular laptop, and never had a discernible error until now. And it's happening over and over.

Re: Can't install 5.2.4

For what it might be worth to anyone else with a similar problem, downloading the install file to a different device worked. Downloaded to my phone, transferred to the laptop, checked the checksum and voila, a match. Install went fine after that.

After 10+ years of one touch downloading of install files with no problems, downloads that match the specified file size byte for byte but don't have matching checksums is pretty far out of my day job, so to speak. That being said, and since my AV was disabled, I have to think the problem was security built-in to MS Edge, which I have been using lately, or maybe even in a "security improvement" in a recent Windows 10 64 update. Anyway, problem solved.

Thanks for the help, guys.
