Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

... the exact position should be 37° 58.4'N; 000° 41.0'W.

However, I used a "star map" to get to the elevation readings, therefore I do not know how exact that is.

Looking at my computation the position is some 3 Nm off to the northwest: 38° 01.11N; 000° 42.8'W. So pretty close, I would say.

As there are buildings around I cannot use a sextant to get to more exact readings. OK??

Best,

Uwe

2 programs gave me different answers.
OpenCpn:- 37*59.8`N 030* 18.9`E
Is this correct?
If so, you have done it.
Bye
OpenCPN says 38°0.3' N, 0°43,2' W.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

It works, but the position is not the same as my other program.
We will see what I did wrong.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Allright, I have submitted a pull request to Sean, he'll see it when he comes online.

I have also updated the POT (translation file), and redone all the French translations (they were very out-of-date, and in some cases completely wrong). I suspect all the translations needs to be reviewed...

It's time to resume a normal activity now

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

It works OK but we will have to investigate more for the accuracy of the positions calculated. But good work, congratulations for the excellent work.
Will keep an eye.
Best Regards.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

After adjusting for temperatures, refraction, height, etc... it is fairly accurate.
It takes a little practice for using it, but you get a good position.
So, I lift my hat for you gentlemen. This is quite a good job done.
Works well in Windows 10.
Best Regards.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Stelian and Uwe, Kubek and P_Dub you've been busy today! I finally got back to the computer, and have compiled Stelian's new plugin with v4.1.602 opencpn.lib (v4.1 was the first version to use wxWidgets 3.0.2 as Stelian figured out).

I forked Stelian's fork and created a Pre-release version after testing it. Which is located here: https://github.com/rgleason/celestia...on_pi/releases
I am trying github "Pre-release" out now rather than uploading to Opencpn Beta File Thingie.

(Stelian, you can do that to in your github if you'd like, just select the "Code" tag in your cel_nav repository and find the "Release" tab.)

I see you have all been testing accuracy which is great. It should be more accurate than the previous version, but I am not really the guy to test that aspect, but will try it later.

Hurrah! It is working. Superb job Stelian. Thank yoou!

Now on to add all the missing opencpn.lib versions to the Dev Manual as I promised.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Just added them "Compressed as a group" since *.lib files are not permitted.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

I confirm that after checking for accuracy with stars sight of 1958 that the results are acceptable and the plugin works correctly. Further sight recently is also correct. So good job thanks to everyone doing it.
Best regards.

It wasn't easy, and I don't have a full explanation.

However, after starting to add traces, I quickly found out that adding one trace (or even just a function call), at specific places, made the program work.

It turned out that those specific places where between the ListItem creation and their display in the List.

This smelled like stack corruption.

When I modified the ListItem allocation (allocate it in the heap and no longer on the stack), it didn't crash anymore. I was on the right track.

I looked for some time in the wxWidgets source code, and I saw that when the listitems are converted into native Windows list items, the attributes (TEXT, DATA, etc) are treated in different ways. And maybe (I didn't push the analysis too far), at this point they reference some value on the stack which in no longer there.

Next, I was grepping for wxLIST_MASK in the other OpenCPN plugins and the comment in WeatherRouting_pi put me on the right track...

Note: When I compiled with wxWidgets 3.1, the bug didn't seem to be there. Or maybe it was, but more difficult to trigger...

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Investigating further, I arrived with a rather large difference of 9.6miles with 2 stars sights as compare with thee position calculated by hand. This could be not acceptable by many people.
Ship's position:- 12-26.6 S, 125-30.6 W
O plugin :- 12-27.2 S, 125-40.4 W
The stars used:- Fomalhaut and Altair
26 June 1958
What do you thing of that?
Regards
