Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

1st:- as far as Mercury is concern, the altitude that you must had hs=76⁰28.0' IE=-1.5', ho=76⁰26.5', and you must have been in a DR 27⁰42.1' N, 017⁰54.8'W
So with an altitude of mercury 85⁰27.0' this was impossible.
2nd:- this put you some 2miles off Hierro Island (Canaries)

Can you confirm the latter?
Regards

Hi,

I think you misunderstood me. Non of my sight was "Mercury".
Maybe you in-corrected interpret 'Mer Pass'. It is Meridian passages of the Sun (LL) or The Noon Sight (RYA Astronavigation Chapter 5).

You should also remember that all my sights are NOT in the same time so you need to do "running fix" (maybe somebody can improve this plugin to have build in drawing "running fix")

All 17 sight I first calculated on paper during passage using Sight Reduction Tables + Almanac for 2017 and to compere it, I do it again using Long Term Almanac 2000-2050 - Kolbe (which is great). Lastly I put my sight into plugin to check it and it looks OK. Same as my paper work (except Mer Pass).

What I would like to see as an option to this plugin is "Meridian passage of the Sun". I used those sight as Sun LL in the plugin but it is NOT as precise as could be (Astro17 - I have on the paper 18°10'N [on GPS it was 18°10,6'N] - plugin draw circle in 18°12.9'N - the reason is that time of the 'Mer Pass' of the Sun is very difficult to measure precisely).

Kubek, I will check your results against mine. P_Dub & Kubek yes I assumed it was Mercury will change. I don't understand why my actual boat pos matters as I generally entered the UT, parameters and altitude given by Kubek. I assumed it was altitude, not azimuth.

Why can't you just take a sun sight or several sun sights?

I thought that the meridian passage allows for simpler math but with the computer has little advantage... what am I missing?

Hi,

Yes, Sun Mer Pass gives you a very precise LAT with minimum maths.
I did several sun sights per day during ocean passage.
I was just after' RYA Yachtmaster Ocean' course and I would like to practice Astronavigation. I would like to use as many methods as was possible. Also I was interested how precise is Astronavigation and I tried to catch GPS position after each sight. Because I had very cloudy weather, there was a problem with starts or planets. I had only few moments to try it. Maybe I could do more or something better, but there was my first time when I used Astro in real. On the boat I did only a paper works.

I used computer plugin at home where I found the thread about the "Celestial Navigation Plugin" crash problem. When you try to enter second sight it crashes. So, to checkup this plugin I used my sights from last ocean passage.

Kubek, congradulations; you are now a salt water fellow by doing this, which is a good thing not to rely only on GPS. These system can go anytime in case of war or major conflict. Furthermore a prudent navigator shall never rely on only one dependent system. Specially satellites, you never know when one crazy terrorism will develop and error in the system.
Best Regards

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Kubek,
The problem with my entry of Sights was that I am an American. The date format in your text file was opposite from my normal experience. When I changed the dates to the proper ones, the Circles of Position fell into place with the exception of one or two sights that needed something else fixed. Please see the screenshot.

I guess its good enough to release now. Thanks so much for all your help!

Hi,

Could you tell me which two sights needed something else fix?
In previous posts I have attached sights.xml, maybe you can replace with yours and check those sights that I enter into plugin.

Re: Celestial Navigation Plugin Redux

Kubek, Your sights were OK. It was my two that were off!
I've added your documents and sights to the bottom of the Wiki because it is a very good test until we can get the "FIND" to correct properly for Parameters.

Kubek's Sights for testing accuracy

Stelian,
git fetch and pulled your upstream, compiled and installed.

I am having trouble getting FIX to work properly now. I wonder if I am missing something? See screenshot please.
