Chart downloader plugin not showing

I've installed ver. 4.8.4 on a desktop XP at home for practice and everything seems fine. But when I load the same version on the same version of XP on my boat laptop, the chart downloader does not show in Tools>Charts tabs. I've tried manually installing the plugin .exe but the only downloadable version of the plugin I find is an older incompatible version so that doesn't work.

Any ideas why the plugin installs on one computer but not another running the same operating system?

You have a different configuration.



Please note where the versions are installed, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN 4.8.2
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN 4.8.4
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN 4.8.6


Have you looked at the plugin directory for your plugin?
Which path are you installing to? Really. Look carefully as you install.
Clean up your Opencpn installations.
Know where your programs are.
Know where user program data is located.
C:\ProgramData\opencpn

Excellent advice, thank you. I think you are correct that it must be a path problem, although I’m away from the boat so I can’t check right now. However on the home computer I installed it on C: drive, whereas on the boat computer I installed it on D: drive. Still, I completely removed the program including cleaning the registry, rebooted and did a fresh install, again on the D: drive and the problem persists. I wonder if the plugins default to C: drive.

And update to OpenCPN 4.8.6, please - if I remember correctly I have rebuilt the crypto libraries for better XP compatibility after 4.8.4.

One slight correction, in re-installing, I already installed version 4.8.6, but the downloader tab is still missing.

The install.log file seems to be 2.3mb of text which is in excess of the forum's limits, and a zip file is not accepted. I could cut and paste a part you want to see, or you can find the file at www.ronlloyd.com/oddstuff/install.zip.

Could you double check :
- it's showing in options --> plugins
- it's not disable.


If it's not in options post your log (help --> About OpenCPN --> Copy LogFile to clipboard)

There is no message about chartdwnlr_pi compatibility in the log file, nor does Chartdownloader 1.3 show in the Options>Plugins, but perhaps chartdwnldr_pi is using a more recent version of opencpn.lib which does not support XP?

Where is chartdwnloader.dll?

No, that does not make sense, XP compatibility is still built in, and wxwidgets 3.0.2 is still used. I certainly don't understand why chartdwnldr is not showing in the Options>Plugin list.

The dll did not exist anywhere on that computer, so I copied it from the other computer and hand loaded it into the plugins dir on the problem computer, still no joy.

So I uninstalled OpenCPN, cleared the registry of opencpn.org and rebooted. I then installed OpenCPN this time on the C: drive instead of the D: drive. Still no chart downloader plugin.

I’m starting to suspect a net connection problem with this computer as there are other anomalies connecting to the internet. Does the chart downloader plugin look for the internet connection to install? Although the other plugins installed.

It’s not really a problem and I can live with it and load charts by hand. So unless you developers really want to chase it, I’m fine. If you do want to chase the problem I’ll try to help all I can. Otherwise thanks for your help so far, it’s much appreciated and kudos for a great program.

the right name is
chartdlr_pi.dll and it needs a chartdldr_pi directorory.


It should be in:
\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN\plugins
for you in
D:\Program Files\OpenCPN\plugins\

From your first log it seems to be installed but O isn't seeing it or it's disabled, but in this case it should be in the log when opening Options-->plugins.


Maybe installing on D: is the issue (oops you already tried on C or there's a missing/incompatible system dll and O is silently failing loading chartdlr_pi.dll. Are both systems at the same SP number?

What version of O are you upgrading from?
Do you use an antivirus software?



I think you should consider a new computer or upgrade this OS. Our xp desktops are no longer supported either. Time to upgrade is coming for sure.

Yes, it is SP3, and also yes a new computer wouldn’t hurt. These days an adequate one can be had for $150 that would work just fine as a dedicated nav station and I’ll probably do that soon. Everything else on OCPN works great and I’m really going to enjoy using it. I was previously using a very old version of MapTech which hasn’t been supported for years and is not compatible with AIS or radar. Thanks for all the help.
