Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Pavel,
I loaded 4.8.8 on my win 7 machine and it seems fine (the chartdownloader plugin is there and works). I guess I hope they will 'fix' win 10 before win 7 goes off line. I don't look forward to that "upgrade?" Then again I am in my mid 70's so I may not have to worry about it (from a sailing perspective anyway)!.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Pavel,
I loaded the Beta 4.99... on my Vista Laptop and it does show the Chart Downloader plugin, and it seems to be working in downloading charts.

thanks,
Ron

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

If your Windows Vista computer is dedicated to navigation I don't think it matters that you no longer get security updates. Mine stays on the boat and has no active network connections. The OpenCPN installation file and charts for updates come to it on a flash drive. I don't think security is an issue.

But then you also don't care about the chart downloader plugin. And that plugin at the other hand must care about the internet reality (= completely dropped support for the only cryptography standards supported by XP and Vista without additional external tools by most of the servers) to be able to download the charts.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

I agree with not being concerned with security. Using the 'beta' version (4.99 etc) of OpenCPN the chart downloader plugin is there and works on the Vista machine. In addition, I can download charts manually or on another pc and transfer them to the Vista machine. I don't need the internet on the boat, but I do connect to my instruments (gps, wind, speed, etc) over wifi using a Kbox and a Raspberry Pi running the Signalk Server. And yes I can run OpenCPN on the Rpi as well, but the laptop is faster and cleaner. However, I do want a stable platform and the Vista machine is getting old enough to concern me in that regard. But it works for now. Besides it is just a convenient planning tool; I have a new Garmin chartplotter and paper charts as well.

thanks,
Ron

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Hello, everyone,
I have been using OpenCPN and the Charts Downloader for a long time.
I come from Germany and try to download the "ienc". Unfortunately there is always a hint that I can only download the maps manually.
Why is that? Is it because of the source or because the catalog.xml has to be changed frequently?
I would like to provide the *.xml with the news and enable the automatic download for all.
Greetings Jürgen

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

That's because the German authorities do not provide an updated .xml
No updated catalogue has been available.
There was a promise to change this, but we don't know about the results of the efforts. Will dig into my mails tomorrow and ask again..

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

Thanks for your quick answer.

Isn't it possible to keep the XML up to date on your own?
This has been annoying me for a long time and I would like to change it.

I would also agree to change the XML all the time.

Jürgen,

Freiwillige vor. Kann man von Hand machen, aber jemand muss es machen...

So als Idee.

Hubert

{as a community project one can take the initiative and maintain those xml files. But somebody has to do it - if the authorities don't make their job}

OK, THEN,

I still have a few things to test first.

But I would like to improve that.

Re: Chart Downloader/Updater Plugin

The reason is actually even more "German" and not directly connected to the catalogs (I would of course welcome a maintainer for them as they must be processed manually in this case)...

A great deal of technical effort was invested by your government to actually make it impossible to download those charts without clicking on that button in a real browser. And I am definitely not willing to invest the effort needed to somehow break this "protection" or whatever that is.

Hello, Pavel,

Thank you for pointing that out. I was afraid it wasn't that easy. I also fail at the button. Too bad!

Then we must probably continue to live with the current situation.

I you want, I can mail you a new xml or a csv, at most once a week or a month.

I had a look at it last year and it wasn't that bad.

Script still works so they don't change too often.

Downloading is doable, it's a form, but not within O logic, it needs a POST

As you can probably imagine, I would prefer PRs for https://github.com/chartcatalogs/cat...NC_Catalog.xml, https://github.com/chartcatalogs/scripts and the chart downloader plugin to do the obligatory POST before download crap...

But anything is better than nothing.
