Chart Types

Can anyone tell me if charts with the .wci file type - as used in sea clear II - are readable by OPENCPN?

Thanks

They aren't, but perhaps they can be converted to bsb/kap format using Mapcal?

Thanks, can you elaborate as to how this would be done?

Load a .wci file in MapCal save as a bmp. Convert bmp to a tif and proceed according to multiple instructions in the chart thread and related threads. Here is one link http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tml#post354836

Also instructions on opencpn.org.

thanks Thomas but having looked at that thread it's as clear as mud - would it be fair to say that for someone of limited technical ability it's a non-starter....... I was looking for solution that was idiot proof!

If you buy BSB charts it'll be idiot-rpoof.. The seaclear format is unique and youre a bit stuck with it, yes it will be challenging (but not undoable) and you will have a universally accepted format in the end. Good luck

Well,

someone in the past proposed a mc2bsbh version with the ability to convert wci to kap header. That tool would help in such conversions by avoiding the need of recalibration (even if the complete conversion would not be in any case a "push button" process).

Good free stuff require personal involvement. Idiot-proof solutions are not in the scope of this forum...

Be involved. Marco.

It's really not to bad to convert wci to kap. When you save the wci to a bmp in mapcal, a CHARTCAL.DIR file is automatically created and appended for each wci to bmp conversion done. So mc2bsbh can convert this file to a bsb header (template file) as usual. The problem area for me has more been the quality of the original wci file. Garbage in garbage out, in the end it is sometimes easier with a recalibration........
