Charts don't open, New PC Windows 8

Used OpenCPN on my prior laptop PC under Windows 7. It was killed. Didn't like a paperweight drop from 2'. Don't recall the version of OpenCPN that was being used, but it was downloaded at least a year ago.
New PC is Windows 8. I'm unimpressed, and less so if that is where my OpenCPN problem lies, but hopefully that is a different story.
Downloaded current version of OpenCPN (3.2.2).
Restored my files from backup. They seem to be OK based on other uses. And, the chart (.KAP) files seem to be there too.
I pointed OpenCPN to them. Libraries>Documents>MyDocument>NOAA Charts.
The charts don't open.
Suggestions?

I tried to attach the file, but don't see anything here that indicates success.

I'll try to copy it in to a subsequent reply. That could be a challenge too as it is quite long, because I have most of the maps for the US East Coast and an error message was created for each file. And, I think I tried twice or so.

The first try had too many characters. 1.3M vs a 60K limit. Here is the beginning of the log, leading to a Failed to Open message.

Looking at the path to each file, it does not seem the same as I recall when I tried to point OpenCPN to the files. Maybe something to do with my file recovery, or just something I don't understand.

Looks like a permissions problem, check "Access Denied" or other errors when accessing or working with files and folders in Windows

I checked the Properties of the files. They were set for the correct Group/user name and Permissions (Full Control etc.). Maybe it's something with .KAP files. Doubt that compatibility for them would be a high concern with Microsoft.

The easiest next step was to just download new NOAA charts. (Maybe some have been updated too.) That fixed the file access problem.

The next hurdle was the GPS. Turns out my Globalsat BU-353 is not compatible with Windows 8. I'll research that in the threads and comment and provide input for others separately as appropriate. More downside to Windows 8.

Had the same problem when I played with Win8 some weeks ago. Solved it by not using OpenGL (Options/display.
Tested maps CM93 and the Dutch ENC's.

Received the GlobalSat Bu-353S4 today and set it up per the instructions. All that went well and it seems to be working fine. It did seem very quick at acquiring eight satellites, especially for the first time.

GlobalSat had said that the chip in the prior model (BU-353) was not compatible with Windows 8. I have no reason to doubt them, and they did offer a work around. But, they certainly have incentive to sell me a newer model. I'm always the skeptic. Anyhow, for $36 I'm current with what seems to be a faster and better GPS.

As to Windows 8, it may well be better, but I have yet to see where. Just learning curve and the need for new hardware expense for me. Someone had commented that the value of Windows 8 would depend on my hardware. My PC is a Toshiba C870 Series ST4NX3 with 4 Gig of memory, Intel i3-2348M chip and 64 bit OS for what it is worth to the tech savvy members of the group.

Thanks to those in the group who offered suggestions. On to more fun things, like sailing.

Yeah, disable your firewall, antivirus, and automatic updates too. Then install Java, and downgrade to IE 6.
