Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Charts are being dropped here:

4shared - charts

Does it matter if I rotate them or not? Not all are at the same orientation.

I will continue until I reach my quota, then I'll ask if I can take down the charts I already posted to start fresh on a new set.

Is anyone interested in getting these out (seeding) as Bittorrent files?

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I tied using the imgkap Gui from end for days and always got errors
Tried the cmd line and ok

If you go the mapcal route you can georef as many images that you need. the chartcal.dir file is appended every time you save calibration
If you then use mc2bsbh and use chartcal.dir as the input file separate .hdr files are created for each chart image listed in the chartcal.dir file. I have calibrated using mapcal 30 charts wich has produced 30 separate .hdr files

If you use the -e switch with mc2bsbh the created files have the extension .kap which is acceptable by imgkap be carefull not to overwrite any existing kap files I know it can spoil your day

This is not the only solution but is can cut down on 2 steps

I am not rotating at this time, just trying to get as many as possible and stitch them. Rotating could be done during the resize/color reduction. Or don't rotate them at all, the georeferencing should be good enough to show it later in the proper orientation.

Torrent sounds fine, but we need to find Mr/Mrs Someone...

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Oh Dear prolems

used imgkap bodrum.png bodrum.kap test5.kap

kap created ok tested in seaclear large sea areaa black depth sounding unreadable
Checked original png file in photo-paint all looks ok

opened kap file in photoshop no problems

opened kap file in kapview same as SeaClear black areas and depths unreadable

Tested in OpenCPN looks great

Tested in coastal explorer not even recognised as a kap chart

Do we bother with compatibility with seaclear etc. I know we are the open guys but are we that generous

Richard

try the not documented imgkap -n option to produce 127 colors, not 128. I read something yesterday in the imgkap thread. But consider I am a total newbie in kap creation.

I would like to keep compatibility to SeaClear, Fugawi, RayTech, Maxsea....

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

using the -n 127 option to reduce the colors to 127 works

can now open in SeaClear OpenCPN Kapview, Photoshop
Cannot get fugawi or coastal explorer to recognise the .kap file

but

can open and view in Fugawi BSB Viewer

But

Cannot open in polar navy

Can you publish your header file, bodrum.kap?

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Here it is

I suspect I may not be providing enough information in Mapcal But the final chart works in OpenCPN Seaclear, photoshop kapviewer but not in Coastal Explorer, The main Fugawi program or Polar Navy
I am more interested in including PolarNavy as Brak has supported this project and the program is low cost

I really need to add a few features to my stitcher so that it will download and convert in one step, but anyhow, per braks advice I reduce the number of colors to an indexed set of 32 (not RGB). If I am doing anything wrong, I'd like to know sooner than later.

4shared folder - charts

Also, I suspect Imagemagick is slow. I can rotate with Irfanview in seconds, but Imagemagick (convert.exe) takes maybe an hour. Finally I use
"optipng -preserve" to try to get that last bit of compression.

I think stitch and convert as a single process is dangerous. We always need a fallback position of the original stitched .jpg file. This is resource that could be ued by by you others to perfect or modify the convert to .kap process

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I agree with Richard and I seem to be way faster using the ruby script.

My Gentoo-box (3Ghz CPU, only 1GB of RAM) also has trouble to finish a imagemagick convert job, but the imagemagick montage function (used in the ruby script) stitches the files reasonably fast. Downloading, stitching, uploading the file takes 35min, in average.

Output of the ruby script is jpg, but the quality is very good, good enough for postprocessing/reducing in size/reducing in colors.

I am halfway thru Region-6, 150 files to go ;-)

Oddly, my little windows 7 notebook is faster for this than my OSX Mac at work.

I just had the same problem with Fugawi. After fiddling with parameters in the kap-header I found:
If "NU" is empty, Fugawi will not display the chart. I think NU gets filled by the "chart number" field in MapCal.

Also: don't try to import the kap file as "BSB / Maptech / Softchart", but use "BSB (Non MapTech)". Then it works here.

Thanks Pat. I did compile the latest, but failed to move it into my $PATH.
So I ended up using an old version.
