CM93 Chart detail?

Good morning, I have been struggling for weeks trying to get the land detail on CM93 charts. When I display the C93 charts, my land mass is mostly black without the detail of paper charts or my hand held Garmin GPS. The water detail is very good, but nothing on the land or very little. Is this normal or a symptom of operator error?
I have tried ot post a picture but have been unsuccessful.
Thanks.

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

Black land is certainly not normal.
However CM93 usually contains very little detail on land.
As usual, a screenshot, and a logfile helps to answer better.

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

I originally atried to attach a print screen of both, I was not able to do it. I will try again later today. A picture would be much better than my discription.

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

I originally thought the CM93 charts would look like the image on the top. They look like the image on the bottom after being loaded. I am using the May 2010.rar files along with the update and printed the directions. All seems to work except the land image. I have also downloaded a number of times the OpenCPN program with no noticable change.

I looked at Florida and the land mass generally has the same characteristics. Is this what the charts look like using the CM93 charts? Thanks, Dave

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

This is still the same problem you reported in an earlier thread, and as I said then: I suspect your CM93 file is corrupt somehow. Everything else in your install looked OK at that time. And this problem has not been reported by anyone else. So the most probable conclusion is that your CM93 is not good.

One thing you can do to verify this is to download some other vector charts, for example a few US ones (Chart Downloader for NOAA ENC®), and see what you get. If they are fine then we know that it's your CM93 that's the problem. If they also show grey land then there is something wrong with your install. So start with that trial and we'll see where we go from there.

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

Hi Dave,
The image at the top is typical for raster (e.g. BSB) charts. They give indeed a lot of detail about the land. That's why I install them too, even if they are old.
CM93 are vector charts which in general give little land detail. There are vector maps with more land info, such as made by Navionics, but these don't run on OpenCPN.
For BSB charts look at one of the sites I mentioned in my PM.

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

Yes this is the same problem although I have downloaded all new files and programs. Printed the directions and followed. I have downloaded the NOAA charts for Flodida and they work, good land detail. The chart that is showing the detail is also run off of the Open program. I was trying to eliminate the situation that I was seeing the best there is with the CM93 charts and not realizing it.

Zoef, I will now go back to your message and follow it. Thanks. Dave

OK, so that clearly proves that you CM93 is somehow broken.
Just for your info, there is not much land detail even with a good CM93.
This is what you get (Well not exactly since I have my own colors and tweaks, but something like this):

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

very interesting. I actually went and downloaded the new files Sunday, printed the directions, and I assume followed to a T. Obviously something is not right. I will download the program into another computer and use these files and see if I get anything else. I am trying to eliminate things to try and isolate the problem. Thanks for your help. From your post I see what it can look like. Dave

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

JesperWe, I have played a little with the program and have gotten more detail on the land. In your message you showed a picture with different colors that looks more like the paper charts I use. It is I believe off of a set of CM93 files.

Were you able to change the definitions in the OpenCPN to generate this?

My intention is to print the CPN manual, find the sections associated with this function, and change the settings so that I am more comfortable with the visual presentaion.

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

Good evening JesperWe. I ahve downloaded the ZIP file that you suggest and when I extract it into the Opne S57data file of OpenCPN I get the following message

! C:\Users\Owner\Downloads\s57data.zip: Cannot create chartsymbols.xml
Access is denied.
! C:\Users\Owner\Downloads\s57data.zip: Cannot create rastersymbols-day.png
Access is denied.

Then nothing. Am I doing something incorrect? Thanks Dave Aloisius

Re: CM93 Chart detail?

That folder is probably under UAC control. Unzipping usually doesn't trigger the UAC popup. Try unzipping to your desktop and then moving the files into the destination folder.
