Create A Gpx File From Celestial Navigation Data?

What software link to get a program that creates the gpx file?
I assume you can input your observations into and it generates this file?
and then can be inputed in opencpn.

How about OpenCPN itself? I mean, if your original data exists on a piece of paper (or in some celestial nav software that doesn't know how to create a .gpx) then you still have to fill in the fix coordinates somewhere, and you might as well create waypoints and route legs manually in OpenCPN as in some other program.

Have a look here -> Celestial Navigation | Official OpenCPN Homepage

If you do the calculations manually and just like to plot the result...something like this ?

If you are interested, there is a command line ruby script, available.

Re: Create A Gpx File From Celestial Navigation Data?

Asking this for a friend who is interested in celestial navigation.
We downloaded that program listed on the help page, but he says the create gpx file button is greyed out. He is at a slip with no internet, so I have acted as the 'gophur' stuff as a favor.

So otherwise your saying he can enter these points as way points manually into opencpn?
He was interested in celestial navigation incase his gps fails to function.
Sure how about the ruby script how to use that?

Yes.

The easiest way to do this is use the "Drop Mark" command somewhere near the correct lat/long, then open waypoint properties on that mark and adjust lat/long to the correct values.

Then after all waypoints are entered the Create Route tool can be used to join them with lines.

(Leaving the other questions for Thomas ;-) )

Re: Create A Gpx File From Celestial Navigation Data?

I have never tried the linked program as it's windows only......

I tested a few things just using the built in capacities in OpenCPN, and my conclusion is, that it's faster to do a position line manually than using a script.
1. Use JesperWe's instruction for the first wpt. This is your assumed position, as used in calculating your azimuth and intercept.
2 Start the "Route" tool, an use the created wpt as a start.
3 Draw the intercept line along the azimuth direction. Drop waypoint No2.
4. Continue the next leg at a right angle to the first. Drop wpt No3.
5. Double back through wpt2 and past. Drop wpt 4.
6. The leg wpt 3 to wpt 4 is your position line.

Re: Create A Gpx File From Celestial Navigation Data?

Ok, I discussed this with him and he really wants to do this here
shown as Celestial Navigation | Official OpenCPN Homepage
He understands the idea of just plotting points but wants to do the "Circles of Equal Altitude" method.
So does anyone have any ideas? Perhaps something he is not doing corrctly in that other program?

Quote:
I have the OpenCPN software. I have downloaded the Navigational Algorithms AstroNavigation software. I want to be able to plot the Circles of Equal altitude within the OpenCPN software. I am not able to create the GPX file needed to import it into the Open CPN software. In the AstroNavigation under celestial fix at the bottom right corner it allows you to create the GPX file that I need to import into OpenCPN , but the options are not highlighted so that when I click on it, it will not create the file. Also within the GPX Chart Work software under CoP it will also not allow me to create the GPX file. I can import GPX files into the OpenCPN software from the examples that are given with the tutorial software that comes with the download. How do I create my own GPX files and for the Circles of Equal Altitude to import into OpenCPN?

I would have to use my windows PC to look into it myself since I usually run Ubuntu.

Now this (The GPX button not working) is no longer an OpenCPN issue.
The creator (Andres) of those programs is sometimes in the forum, but if you check his website at https://sites.google.com/site/naviga...gorithms/about there is an email where he might be reached quicker...

Hello to all,

With my software there are two ways to generate a .gpx file to import it in Google Earth or OpenCPN
1. Using Astronavigation.exe [GPX] Celestial Navigation | Official OpenCPN Homepage Start with new observations. Try to save them into a file and then open it: [File][Save as...] and [File][Open] the pushbuttons [Coastlines WVS] and [GPX] becomes active.
2. Using ChartWork.exe Chart Work | Official OpenCPN Homepage

The first calculate the celestial body coordinates, in the second You need a Nautical Almanac.

See the example. Available in your installation directory Chart Work\Tutorial\Celestial Navigation\CD Example. Or links at OpenCPN User Manual.

best regards.
