Current VPP verses OpenCPN plugins

How relevant is Visual Passage Plan (VPP) currently when planning ocean passages as compared to the selection of OpenCPN plug-ins as Pilot Charts,Climatology,and Polars?

Visual Passage Planner VPP is a good passage planner.


OpenCPN's weather_routing_pi using climatology_pi (35 years of Noaa wind and current data) is comparable to Visual Passage Planner. I believe weather_routing is more complex to configure but there are more options and controls. (My experience with VPP is from some time ago.)

In addition weather_routing also uses Grib predictive weather data, so it can assist planning in both a very general way and more specifically in smaller scale with current data.
