Debian 8 (jessie) install problems

I'm trying to install OPENCPN on a Debian 8 (jessie) laptop. I've tried following the instructions provided by OPENCPN for installing on Linux. I added the ppa repository but no changes show up in the /etc/apt/sources.list. When I try to install I get an error message of 'package opencpn has no installation candidate'. I've been working with Raspberry Pi's and Raspbian for a year or so but this is my first time venturing into ppas and Debian 8.
I note that I need to get wxwidgets-2.8 for sid. A newbie level explanation (or link) for any of these problems would be appreciated.
Tried to load ppapencpn/opencpn repository again and getting the error that ppa.launchpad jessie/main i386 packages not found.

I am not familiar with debian, but the PPA would be:
Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu trusty main
Or for the beta:
Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nohal/opencpn/ubuntu trusty main
For wxwidgets:
Code:
deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ sid main
