Depth Sounder Display

Hello,
I am a new OpenCPN user and I have installed version 5.2.4 at my home computer, as well as Radar 5.1.4 plugin and AIS Radar View 1.2.6.0. All is working well in our test environment.
My question is, can I connect my Garmin GSD 22 Depth Sounder #010-00397-00 with my GMN #010-10182-01 Transducer to display on OpenCPN? The plan is to run the network cable to a Red Lion 108TX Ethernet Switch which is connected to our computer. The 108TX is in the mail.
That said, my transducer is installed on my boat, so I can't hook it up at this time. I would like to know what I should expect. Do I need anything else? Is there a way that I can test this system without the transducer connected?

Re: Depth Sounder Display

Opencpn accepts well formed checksum Nmea 0183 sentences
I don't know what garmin marine network is.

It sounds like it will work, others may know more. Best way to check is to use the transducer.

Re: Depth Sounder Display

James..
I could be the old "Garmin marine network" is a TCP-IP transmitting NMEA0183. Try e.g. TCP IP 176.16.1.10 port 10110 in OCPN.
I lot trial and error may be needed. Use NMEA Debug window to check what's coming in.
Hopefully someone experienced with this network is showing up.

Re: Depth Sounder Display

OCPN can't display a sounder screen. It can display depth from NMEA0183 data.

The installation manual for the sounder isn't much use but it does mention that the power cable is power/data. Often the power/data cable is power and NMEA-0183 so if that is the case your best bet is to feed that in OCPN.

If the sounder power/data cable does not include NMEA-0183 connections your best bet is to grab NMEA-0183 from one of the other devices, your plotter or suchlike.

I don't work much with Garmin, it is not very popular in my area, but I don't think it will be as easy as grabbing NMEA-0183 off the network.... however it might be Anyway a network connection is serious overkill for a depth sentence.

Re: Depth Sounder Display

Moo, I thought the purpose was to show the depth in Dashboard or DashT?

James, it is normal to provide some feedback on forums... i.e. what worked, what didn't. That's what's makes these invaluable resources tick..

How did you get on?
