Re: Donations and Hardware

I frequently buy stuff on Ebay and Paypal is very convenient then. I've not got a problem with Paypal although I have heard of people who have. I've never met one though. So the system for donations seems OK to me.

I'd get rid of the top one on the page...It gives a bad impression. Then I'd rearrange the "Support OpenCPN" section by putting the donate button right after or below

"It's easy to donate through PayPal."

then this: " A donation link is also available in the program:
Locate and press ? ....
and so on.

... I wouldn't blame anyone for not signing up to PayPal. Possibly, those who want to give to O could just find a Paypal user and give them the cash and it would be donated for them, in their name too if they like.

Re: Donations and Hardware

[QUOTE=bdbcat;1080965]Hello OpenCPN users....

The OpenCPN donation stream, while never strong, has dwindled to nothing and essentially gone dormant.]

I had no idea the project was strapped for cash, until I came across reference to the situation on Valhalla's web site.

Donation made.

May I suggest you be a bit more upfront in publicising the situation. Given the garbage that is mostly posted on CF generally, I tend to skip very quickly through thread headings, and completely passed over this thread. Your thread heading is a bit subtle. Suggest a more grabbing heading....OPENCPN NEEDS CASH TO CONTINUE, DONATE NOW

All the best for a great project.

oooh! That's 'way better. Somebody reading the page is quickly shown the distinctive button twice without pestering. So it'll be better recognized in the ? page too...I actually posted here 'way back trying to find the donate button, having seen it there without "seeing" it.

Re: Donations and Hardware

I hope you wont get problems with paypal payment limits, theyre quite fond of locking my account down every so often..

I'm super fond of this programme and like installing it for people, although many cruisers I meet have already got it (Atlantic Europe, Med, Canaries)

I've also chipped in, thanks to all devs, supporters writing documentation and sorting out the website, and especially Dave of course.

Re: Donations and Hardware

I'd like to mention one reason why I find it important to donate

September 2011 - I had just bought an AIS receiver, and at 2 A.M. I was sailing close-hauled towards the Scilly islands across the area where ships fan into the Ushant Traffic Separation Scheme.
AIS and OpenCpn said a liner (25 knots +) would cross less than one NM in front of me and at the same time a fast (21 knots) German container ship less than one NM behind me.
I thought: Now I know how minced beef feels in a hamburger stall and let's hope Dave has done his homework right.
I just plodded on.
'Thanks Dave' I mumbled a few minutes later...
