Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

A number of doc sections are now marked "Needs Review" in the Status & Progress doc. Is there a specific review process?

I'm unable to update the Status & Progress page - insufficient rights to edit, though I can edit other documentation pages.

Sailor1026 - The editors are the ones who make and remove these comments. I am likely the one to have made the majority of "Needs Review" as I have been reorganizing pages, and making sure the overall outline works, I have been reading and trying to edit, so when I get stopped, stumped or interrupted, I will add notes.

You should be able to edit the Editor Manual "Progress and Status" by going into the DWedit Mode, see the attached.

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

We need to get this User Manual done.

Some current Editors have left their pages on HOLD for many days:
  • Track Tab - Mermike
  • Track Properties
  • Use Tracks
  • Toggle Tracking
  • Layers Tab Cyclop Kevin
  • Layers Properties
  • Use Layers
If Mermike and Cylcop Kevin are ready to release these pages or have completed them, it would help to release them to get this manual done.

We now need a volunteer editors for review, update with OpenCPN 5.9 to make sure the screens and operation has not changed of the following topics:

Routes
  • Routes Tab
  • Route Properties
  • Use Routes

Waypoints
  • Waypoints Tab
  • Waypoints Properties
  • Use Waypoints

Tracks

  • Track Tab
  • Track Properties
  • Use Tracks
  • Toggle Tracking
Layers

  • Layers Tab Cyclop Kevin
  • Layers Properties
  • Use Layers
  • Layers Library under the Advanced User Manual, if the topic is too complex.

Intercommunications

Navigation Data Backup

Use GPX

Route Handling

Chart Panel

Please PM me with your Name, email, photo software, and skillset. Thanks.

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

Rick,
the DWedit icon is what I've been using. It works for the manual itself. The DWedit icon is a pencil when I have edit privs and shows as a book when I don't. So I think it's a problem with permissions.

Yes, Terry. I agree. I found that I had changed the underlying name of the folder from edit_manual to editor_manual and had to set the permissions for the new file.

I hope it works now.

Thanks for letting me know.

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

NOTICE:
The entire OLD 2021 Manual has now been removed completely. Plugin Documentation should now be found on github.io, by following the links provided in the current Opencpn Wiki.

EDITORS:
I have reset the ACL access for managers(editors) for the Editor-Manual so you should now be able to "edit" those pages including the 2024 Status and Progress page. I am sorry about that earlier problem. Please let me know if it is still not fixed.

[Mermike] Mike G. done a very nice job on Tracking
[Cyclop Kevin] Has a hold on Layers. I don't know if he has done anything.
[Tormundi] John has been working diligently on Connections and Advanced. (as have I)

We still need Editors to review all of these pages:
Routes, Waypoints, Intercommunications, Navigation Data Backup and Use GPX files.

We also need to have someone review and read carefully and make any comments needed, the nine pages for Chart Panel.

Finally we need someone to be responsible for reviewing and editing the 5 Chart pages under Set Options.

Once these are done, the manual will be in reasonable shape.

Volunteers, this is your User Manual. Please PM me with your Full Name, email, photo software, skill set, and interest in Editing a section. Thanks.

I count 24 pages left to Review and Edit and with a complete date of June 8th (so we can all go sailing), that is 14 days from now. So we need to complete 1.7 pages per day!

We need screenshots posted here for the manual!

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

We still need those screenshots, and no User has stepped up to provide them.

Editors we must get 21 Pages Done to complete the Basic User Manual. That is about 2 pages per day to complete by Sat, June 8. 2024 Status & Progress

I would like each Editor to pick an unfinished page under Manage Routes and take two or three days to edit it and mark it DONE followed by your name.

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

We need some Editors to commit to review & edit these 4 pages:
  1. Intercommunications
  2. Navigation Data Backup
  3. Use GPX Files
  4. Handling Routes
I do not expect that these will need heavy editing, but they need a little love and attention.

We need an Editor to take on these three important pages which have already been edited and improved, but have outstanding FIXME and some unresolved questions.
Manage Routes > Routes Tab
Manage Routes > Route Properties
Manage Routes > Use Routes

Manage Routes > Waypoints -Marks Tab
Manage Routes > Waypoint Properties
Manage Routes >Use Waypoint-Marks

We need an Editor to take on these three pages which have been started but need some work to complete. It should not be that difficult to do as the layer concepts are simple. We had an Editor for this but he has not produced anything., so now we need someone who will finish this small project.
Manage Routes > Layer Tab
Manage Routes > Layer Properties
Manage Routes > Use Layer
Thank you

The goal is to complete the Manual by Sat, June 8.
2024 Status & Progress has been revised to show how far we have come and how close we are to finish.

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

Rick,

I'll start with Intercommunications, and Using GPX Files.

But I have a problem with editing Using GPX Files:
When I preview, or save, I get this:
403
Forbidden
Access to this resource on the server is denied!

I have no problem with previewing or saving Intercommunications.

Thank you John. That will be a huge help.
I hope other Users will realize that this effort is for all of us and that by spending a little time editing 1-3 pages will benefit everyone, while learning something new about the program. Then when June 8th arrives, the manual will be completed when we produce the html and pdf files for it.

John, re 403 errors. I had the same problem earlier today. I wrote kathi and bdbcat about the 403 error, and perhaps one of them did something, but I think not as I did not hear back. Late this afternoon after gardening, it appeared to have resolved itself. I tried a half dozen times in different ways, and lost changes each time. Kind of frustrating, but I think the server gets hammered with changes and then decides you are a spammer. Then there is a timer and the 403 goes away. Don't know how long it takes, but we were gardening 5 hours.

Re: Editors Needed for User Manual Basic

OpenCPN programming and documentation is all volunteer work. The program's success depends on the willingness of people to participate and devote their skills.

While we have had a few active editors like John below, I would really appreciate having 3 more active editors to get this job done. It baffles me, why we have so few users contributing as Editors, when there are so many passionate OpenCPN Users. We need these pages reviewed and edited

John, let me know if gpx files is still a problem. Thanks.
