ENC S57 Upper Miss. loading problem

Hi, I'm trying to load the Corps of Engineers S57 charts of the upper Mississippi. I have downloaded them, unpacked them into the ENC_Root directory and added that to my list of directories.

But, each mini-region has its own ENC-Root file, several sub directories, and many files.

I don't know how to proceed after the download?

Must I copy each area's files into the ENC_Root directory.

The structure is:

Charts>ENC_Root>IENC_S57>U37AR001>ENC_Root>U37AR00 1 (typical)

Thanks! /Stu

Re: ENC S57 Upper Miss. loading problem

Why don't you just try it and see what happens?

I've downloaded by CG district and each district has a single ENC_Root and the districts are in a single folder. ENC Charts>District 1>ENC_Root>stuff

Using "http://ec2-54-235-76-27.compute-1.amazonaws.com/ienc/web/main/ienc_009.cfm"

I downloaded the the Missippi and some other rivers. I don't remember what I did but I ended up with USInlandCharts>U37UM819>ENC_Root>U37UM819>Stuff

It works.

Re: ENC S57 Upper Miss. loading problem

David,

I did try it (loading the Corps of Engineer charts) - and nothing happens. I also copies selected charts into the ENC557 directory - nothing happens.

I believe I must have missed a setting in OPENCPN - do you have to change any settings to see the loaded charts?

Thank you for the reply. /Stu

I also loaded the Downloader - but can't find any instructions to make it work. I'm sure my approach is harder than it should be - can someone point me to the instructions, please.

I'm assuming that you added the "mississippi directory" to the directory list and did a Full Database Rebuild. Right?

I would put ENC charts in a separate chart group

When zoomed out (way out) do you see the outline of the Miss. charts? The chart outline looks like a fat river, not the rectangles you may be used to. You have to zoom way-way in to see the charts.

No, I don't know where the downloader help file went. It's pretty easy to use if you use the predefined catalogs.

Do any ENC charts work?

Re: ENC S57 Upper Miss. loading problem

you can get the charts on the COE website just like OPENCPN page says.
go ahead and get the entire zip file
I put it in downloads/opencpn for convenience
the download files will be folder IENC_S57
select the folder and extract all to wherever you want the final files.
I used C:/chartsi
you will get
c:/chartsi/with a lot of files
pick the first file and extract all to enc_s57
repeat for all the rest
final result will be
c:/chartsi/enc_s57/enc_root/and lots of files
your directory for the charts will be
c:/chartsi/enc_s57/enc_root
you can delete the rest under
c:/chartsi/enc_s57
good luck
