Re: Garmin (N2K) via QK A034 to OPN CPN

open the device manager and deploy LPT & COM ports.

with the GPS plugged in computer, only, unplug the GPS and check if it has been any missing COM port, also, you should have to hear the classical sound of unplugged device.
wait 30 seconds and plug again the GPS and see if there is any exchange in a new COM port, or if found any unknown device, if the GPS is found as new COM port this would be the one to setup in OCPN.
for the sake of good order also reboot computer if you can after unplug the GPS, to avoid any interference from previous drivers, etc.

maybe if you can in device manager delete the COM17 with GPS unplugged, all COM17.

The path of hurt… never ends.

If the mux you have has Ethernet, you can even plug a crosscable between that and the laptop to end this suffering

but he hasn't and the QK has no LAN connection, just in case if QK not far away from computer he could try a wi-fi connection and check if there is data connection with the QK, other problem is the USB connections that he has direct to computer.
also I guess that QK could be sending garbage because of the output speed that maybe should be not enough with the devices connected to N2K network.

I had the speed problem with one output of my multiplexer that is slave of the input #4 and set to 38400 but not enough to deal with all devices at the same time. in such case I have to filter output sentences in that port.
when in the output port #2 at 115000 bps the system could deal with all the devices without any problem. that's another system shipmodul that is really fantastic but not cheap at all with LAN connection and N2K altogether.

COM16 is the internal GPS based in Gobi 2000 mobile modem.
I had one with my old laptop, but it won't do so much because you said that your boat is aluminum made and supposed to be down below, so, not so much GPS signal received.

USB switch?
No.
the Panasonic Toughbook Is mounted on a Vehicle mount base that has 6 usb ports, plus 3 on the laptop itself.

By the way, lap top is mounted in the pilot house, and there for
has resonable gps view of the sky...
So that does explain the data coming in with GPS prefixes...

It would seem that I am missing a few resopnses.
I guess they might be arriving as I am responding to the first, when the next comes in...
I am trying to stay current, and rechecking frequently...

so, it means that you have one connection done in OCPN to COM16 at 4800 either 9600 bps as internal GPS??
otherwise, could sound as witchery. because is also not connected to QK.

I have never had issues getting a NMEA/USB gateway working, or much reliability issues except for corrosion of the USB port after a few years of ocean sailing.

Likely, this problem here is very simple and we as remote support people just can't get at the information we need. Or, it just isn't a feature that works, hence my suggestion to call support. That still might be the quickest answer.

Had he not already purchased the QT, I certainly would have gone another way. But having it, I don't see a reason to not try and make it work.

Yes but now someone wrote that it does not have Ethernet, while before I read that it did so it’s all unclear to me. One thing is sure: Windows is messing up the com ports and drivers again.
