Google Earth plugin does not work Version 5.2

Hello to everybody,

I just downloaded the new OpenCPN version 5.2. I noticed that Google Earth plugin does not work any more and it is not managed by OpenCPN. Opened separately GE works properly and could be opened with previous version 5.0. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

You need an old version of Google Earth to use it.

Thanks Franziska!!! You are right. I uninstalled GEpro leaving only GE and plugin works perfectly. The new version when installed was searching for GEpro before GE.

I've tried using GE 6.2 and 6 and both report error 'Google Earth cant connect to the imagery server to download new images'
Any ideas how to resolve please? I'm running OpenCPN 5.2.4

You can't resolve it, this plugin became obsolete with these long abandoned versions of GE and it was just a question of time when Google cuts them away completely which from your post seems to have happened already. For satellite imagery I suggest using mbtiles, which you can generate from many more sources than just Google satellite imagery using tools like SASPlanet, as a replacement.

Sat2Chart is still able to create a mbtiles or kap chart from Google Earth Pro. And it of course can create them from SasPlanet:

Google turned off the URLs that the old versions used and the new version doesnt support the API...

There is no "GE button" in OpenCPN.
Of course unless the user still has the obsolete and now unusable GE plugin installed and enabled for whichever reason.
The mention of the plugin on the website will get completely removed on next update as well.

I d/l the GE plug in from the OpenCPN website, installed it and spent the entire day hunting down versions of GE that it might work with without throwing erros like: Unable to connect to Https://.....

This left me with a button in OpenCPN, and the latest version of GE and no functionality.

Then I spent a day reading obsolete websites about GE2KAP (now defunct) and long pages about making mbtiles to import to OpenCPN.

reading the OpenCPN website, there was nothing about any of this. No description of the history of development as it relates to GE, no mention of alternative solutions <COUGH> SASplanet ..... and now you have deleted all mention.

If I might be so forward as to suggest, a little UP TO DATE info on your site (ie with a date at the head of the page) about all this would go a long way.

Well, the word "solved" is a little comprehensive for my ascent of the OpenCPN mountain in fog, rain, squalls, lightning strikes, false bearings, seagul attacks and 40kt headwinds, but I think I got the anchor in the head message that Open CPN no longer directly supports GE :/
and that the route is via a third party app via MBtiles format?
