GPS accuracy and polling rate.

Hi all, first post here, I’ve been using Open CPN for about 5 years now on my launch.
I’m running windows 10 with a USB dongle for GPS in New Zealand. We get a good GPS signal and it shows many satellites connected but the frequency in which it updates position is not fast enough. I do a lot of deep drop fishing so I need to be able to accurately see my drift and direction of travel. I’m finding currently I can drift 100m before it even realises and then just draws a straight line to where I am now from where I stopped motoring. I think a digital compass would also be a nice addition in finding out the heading of the boat vs the direction of drift.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can improve the accuracy of the software?
Is there a go to GPS dongle to use on windows 10 that might just make everything much better?

Thanks

Re: GPS accuracy and polling rate.

Dongles are typically bad GPS receivers without WAAS correction and 1 second update rate. Best bet is to get a marine GPS or one of these:

Basically, anything that has U-Blox in it is high quality, 10 Hz or higher update rate and WAAS.

No worries, Thanks for the reply!
I will buy one of those little dongles you linked. Otherwise if that doesnt make life better I will just get a new GPS/Fishfinder/Radar combo..
Thanks
