Open the Terminal.app and issue this comand:
Code:
ls -l /dev/cu*
If your GPS works you should see the name in the result.
Enter this name in the OpenCPN settings.

Re: GPS Mac os 10.13

Ya right . . .

""Mac OSX

Attaching a GPS device to a Mac is done via one of the USB ports. Whether using a device with its own USB lead or via a serial-USB adapter lead or an NMEA multiplexer with USB port, the appropriate OS X driver needs to be installed. Nearly all hardware uses one of just two chip makes: those from FTDI or Prolific. Both those companies make OS X drivers available on their web sites, but manufacturers of GPS devices usually package the driver with device.
When the driver is installed and the device connected, start OpenCPN, select the Toolbox and click the GPS tab. Open the “NMEA Data Source” menu & select the the device from the list. It is not always obvious which is the correct one, but in general the device will have a name starting: ”/dev/cu.“ or ”/dev/tty.“. Some manufacturers make it obvious, like ”/dev/cu.MiniPlex-99000125“, but others may be more generic, like: ”/dev/cu.usbserial“. Set the “NMEA Baud Rate” to 4800 and click “OK”. If the correct selection has been made, you should see the GPS status icon change from red to green. ""

it's in here somewhere . . . doh

Re: GPS Mac os 10.13

Where did that quote come from? There is no "GPS tab"...

Read for your self directly from the friendly manual.

RTFM . . . ??

Getting Started

OpenCPN 4.8.2

and this is supposed to be 5.2.0+4d956e1??

It would be nice if someone could share a mac os screen shot of this "GPS tab".

could this be a failure to communicate?? (computer to server?)

In Options|Connections create a new COM connection and select your device from the drop down menu.

On macOS this not different from other environments.

Re: GPS Mac os 10.13

I'm a Mac user. Here's your screen shot with the GPS unit you have installed.

Like the previous post says, create a new connection. Define it as "Serial" and choose "/dev/cu.usbserial" from the dropdown list. Set the baud rate to 4800 and it should work. If you don't see "/dev/cu.usberial" in the list, then it's not installed correctly and OpenCPN can't connect to it.

Be sure it's "Enabled." Mine is not, as I don't use it except as a back up or when traveling to other's boats.

Re: GPS Mac os 10.13

Ok folks we have an updated program and an old RTFM.

We have a GPS 'tab' (start OpenCPN, select the Toolbox and click the GPS tab . . . this is from the friendly manual) that is actually under the "options" tab of the "Toolbar" (not Tool box) and part of a "Connection" function (if I may call it that). And never a specific call to GPS . . . oh, I'm just supposed to know that GPS in an
acronym for 'connection'.

And I dare anyone to post a screen shot of a ""GPS tab"".

I am disappointed with O, as Mac ENC has a beautiful all inclusive "GPS window" and same for AIS.

Sorry people but it is so true . . .""Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction. Albert Einstein""

I'll leave you all to your windoze.

bye

Re: GPS Mac os 10.13

It's not just GPS and AIS - there are more messages and one can as well filter and forward information - hence it is about "connections" or "communication".

Don't expect two user interfaces to be identical. Especially in the case of a program like OpenCPN which is running under a bunch of different system families. macOS one of them. With about 10-15% of the user base.

The people who answered to you did that from some Mac btw.

If you expect a "gated community software", OCPN is perhaps not the correct navigation solution for you. But it seems the only (?) one for macOS that is alive and gets maintained and developed.

Fair winds!
