Re: grib enhancements

Here are a series of screen shots from qtVlm's excellent grib interface. Perhaps they will give you some ideas for the features and grib graphics. Qtvlm allows loading a separate grib current file which can be very helpful. This interface is undergoing improvements for a new version right now.

The fact that qtVlm has these features does not mean that Opencpn does not need them, IMHO. These features are useful in both programs!

Re: grib enhancements

qtVLM is called so because it is based onto the Qt graphics. OpenCPN is based however onto wxWidgets graphics which is a quite different thing!
I see no change to rewrite OpenCPN to Qt.

Re: grib enhancements

Rewrite is was not suggested. I know about this difference and it has been discussed in several other threads. Sean asked what ideas there were for the grib interface, and qtVlm is the best interface example available that I know of. I never thought that someone would think that I was suggesting "rewrite"!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Re: grib enhancements

By interface, to be more specific, I am referring to gribs, the way they are obtained, downloaded, handled and displayed. I am not talking about navigation.

Re: grib enhancements

I think mostly I'll have what qtvlm has once I can implement automatic downloading, and displaying of all grib field types, including humidity cloud cover snow etc.. This shouldn't be too difficult.

As far as rewriting opencpn in qt.. I have thought of this, it would have some advantages.. but the amount of work involved is large.. it would take me several weeks just to have a version for testing which would likely be full of bugs, and most likely and the end result would have no enhanced functionality at least initially. Because of all the use of datastructures and things not even specific to user interface. Then doing this would fork the codebase and the other developers may well stick to wxwidgets at that point it would make it even more difficult to maintain. This is something I will have to think about again, but I will wait a few years at least before attempting anything.

Re: grib enhancements

Interesting point about forking and having codebase split and developers split. One of OpenCpn's great strengths is the tremendous focus of programming skills and huge knowledge of the many aspects of navigation, charts, etc. There is an advantage in redundency, but it would be wonderful if certain individuals and their efforts were 'cloned', which is a measure of how much they contribute. I am relatively new, so I don't know the whole histoy. Sean thank you for taking on the weatherfax plugin and the grib plugin enhancements. These will bring an important set of new features to us. You live in a great place ".... bike to the library here in whangarei". -I hope to return there some day.

Hakan...
I'm doing what I can
Attached is a new DLL built from the latest code available. Get the file, get rid of .doc and copy to your plugin folder. OpenCPN 3.1.x needed

Re: grib enhancements

Pavel..
Many thanks. I didn't at all meant to stress if that was the message I sent? (Poor English?) And we all try to do the best. The difference could be that in your case the result is excellent.
I'll try the new version and come back with a report.

Re: grib enhancements

Hello
Report for "grib_enhanced..." as of post #40

- The "-99999998" are still there. Compare post #9 in this thread.
The minus values are viewed for time stamps (GMT); 20:00, 02:00, 08:00 an so on for attached grib file. That is again every 6th time part of the file.

- Sea temperture is not shown although I marked it to do so. I "ordered" sea temparature but I'm note sure if it's really in the file. If possible please check.
The file request was:
send gfs:45N,65N,10W,20E|1,1|6,12..180|PRMSL,WIND,HGT,S EATMP,AIRTMP,WAVES
(from 'query@saildocs.com')

- The crash when enter and exit plugins prefferences from OCPN tool bar is fixed. Good.

Attached: My settings for the grib plugin and used grib file. (Skip .doc extensions)

Attached grib is for Cape Hatteras, it should have values for

  • Waves -yes shows numbers under cursor
  • WaveDir -yes shows under cursor
  • PERSW -what is it
  • DIRSW -what is it

  • WVPER -what
If you would like to request similar gribs yourself:
send an email to query@saildocs.com, subject doesn't matter, can be emtpy, in the email body type (all in one line, I think the "send" can be omitted):
Code:
send WW3:37N,33N,079W,072W|1,1.27|0,3..168|WIND,HTSGW,W VDIR,WVPER,DIRPW,PERPW,DIRSW,PERSW

Is this correct?
Images and information seems to be getting better.
Is arrow length implimented?

Looked for saildocs index of acronyms, found saildocs instructions bbut not acronyms. Where is this found?

Opencpn-git/src is the one that contains the source.
Opencpn-gi/Opencpn is something that shouldn't exist at all...
Usual content of the Opencpn source checked out from git (+ build directory created by hand)
Code:
build buildosx buildwin CMakeLists.txt data FindGLEW.cmake Findgps.cmake FindPortaudio.cmake FindTinyXML.cmake include INSTALL NSIS.template.in opencpn.spec.in plugins po README src VERSION.cmake version.h.in wxWidgets
I did not have FindGLEW.cmake is that a problem?
I also had an ss file that looks like a git diff file to me.
I deleted the Opencpn directory that should not have been there.
Thanks.
