GshhsHiRes

Hello all developpers,

Just an idea.
There are several plugins that require downloading and installing the detailed GshhsHiRes background map.

This is one of the few things that users still have to do "by hand", putting their hands in the sludge.

Can any of you create a plugin for the automatic installation of this background map?

Best regards. Gilletarom

Re: GshhsHiRes

HiRes_pi has now been posted to GitHub.

This is a simple utility for adding files from GshhsHiRes.zip to the OpenCPN program. These files produce a better resolution of the
base map coastline than those provided by the initial installation.

The utility uses a hard-coded URL "http://opencpn.org/ocpn/downloads/data/GshhsHiRes.zip". If this changes the code will need to be
updated.

WINDOWS ... The utility can be installed from the .exe in the Releases section on GitHub. If using the dll directly without the installer please remove .pdf and copy to the plugins folder.

Not yet tested with Linux.

https://github.com/Rasbats/HiRes_pi

Use is pretty self-explanatory. The utility tests if the HiRes files have already been installed. I will write a page for DokuWiki idc.

Re: GshhsHiRes

This plugin is not needed for Linux as a ppa package is already available.

Administrator permission is needed to write to the gshhs folder on Windows. An updated version on GitHub tests for the necessary permission.

If the plugin fails with a warning about write permissions please close and re-run OpenCPN as Administrator. The easiest way is to find the opencpn.exe file with Windows Explorer, right-click on the file name and choose 'Run as administrator'.

Perhaps the installer for OpenCPN should give write permission to the /gshhs folder?

Re: GshhsHiRes

With the new DokuWiki the HiRes (alpha) plugin fails because the URL for gshhshires.zip cannot be handled by wxWidgets (wxURL_NOPROTO).

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/li...gshhshires.zip

When time allows perhaps the zip file can be copied to a location like:

https://www.opencpn.org/OpenCPN/doc/

The HiRes plugin could then be updated.

Re: GshhsHiRes

I have abandoned the HiRes plugin.

Giving the 'gshhs' folder of OpenCPN is a bad idea. And running O as Administrator is a pain. And installing a plugin for this simple job?

Until the hires files can be incorporated in the chart downloader I have made an installer for Windows users.

http://mikerossiter.co.uk/opencpn/fi..._installer.exe

The installer is about 2Mb larger than the zip file. Not significantly larger I feel.

Would welcome feedback from anyone trying the installer.

The ReadMe can be customised for different languages. Please PM me if you want to help with this.

Re: GshhsHiRes

Sorry folks,

I did not realise that so many people would want to download the installer for the gshhs files.

My website has been suspended due to exceeding bandwidth transfer allowance. Another solution is needed.

Apologies,

Re: GshhsHiRes

The gshhs high resolution files installer is available again via GitHub:

https://github.com/Rasbats/gshhs/rel..._installer.exe

About 3 minutes to download.
