Re: Help / FAQ

Thiomas,

That seems to have done the trick. Thanks!

I am trying to send the additional file but can't find the "chartlist.dat.old". Where should it be located?

Re: Help / FAQ

Todd

Great, I'm happy this helped you.
Well, the file is in a hidden directory in your home folder.
I'm using a mixture of Gnome and Kde and on the Dolphin file manager
the key strokes "Alt" + "." reveals all the hidden files and directories. These all start with a "." . Find the ".opencpn" directory and there is your file.
Alternatively, here is a command that moves the file to be visible in your home directory and gives it the file-extension ".doc", ready to be uploaded to this forum.
Code:
mv /home/todd/.opencpn/chartlist.dat.old /home/todd/chartlist.dat.old.doc

Re: Help / FAQ

I also have an issue with my new primary helm computer opencpn. I am running 32 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a samsung d210 netbook with a pixel qi transreflective display.

When I try to open ENC charts there are issues. When I pass the cursor over the green bar at the bottom of the screen, the chart info & preview appear, when I click on it to open the chart the background is grey with lines in the background. BSB charts seem to be working fine.

On both computers there are also random red lines in the blue (BSB) chart bars on the bottom of the screen, just a cosmetic issue, i think.

Gato Verde....

If you can post your logfile, we can take a look. Sounds like you are failing to find the S52PLIB files....

Re: Help / FAQ

I looked at the .log file and it didn't appear to be logging as i had just shut down a session and the newest session in the .log was from March. Hmmm... so I un-installed and re-installed opened the program switched through a few charts both vector & raster moved the boat then shut down. when I checked the .log it was the same as before showing 2 sessions from march 27 & 29??? The log is very large and I can't attach the whole thing so here is a piece of it.

there may have been a short time when the ENC's were working and I wonder if this was the session when it did...

11:08:56: Version 2.4.412 Build 2011-04-12
11:08:56: SData_Locn is C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\
11:08:57: Error: Image file is not of type 9.

and also in the previous Beta..

08:42:09: 2011-04-13
08:42:09: -------Starting opencpn-------

08:42:09: SData_Locn is C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\

Notice the " Z - 07:00". The time zone is given like this for each station, except that a lot of acronyms for the US time zones are used like "EDT".

So that means seven hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), right? Not everyone knows Z, or Zulu time, means GMT.

Re: Help / FAQ

So it reads the BST (GMT+1) from my PC and subtracts an hour for me? NB It does get the times right in local time somehow..

The real calculation is always done in UTC (used to be known as GMT), then it is converted to local time for displaying. The local time zone is specified as part of tide station description in the database.

In this case your local time (BST) is not part of the equation.

If you are adventurous, try the tide stations around the Date Line (Suva, etc.)... it's on my testing list, but I lack the courage...

PS. Note that OCPN lists the timezone as the calculation needed to obtain Local Time from UTC (Z-7 reads as "what you see above is 7 hrs ahead of UT"). In the Admiralty Tide Tables the timezone is listed as the calculation to obtain UT from Local Time, so France is listed as "-0100".

Re: Help / FAQ

I was adventurous and opened the can of worms, checked the times and dates around the dateline.
OpenCPN applies my local date to everywhere. Z+12 is still the 19:th, even though it locally is the 20:th ( Z ~ 1800 now). A bit strange but not a problem when you actually are in Z+12 as your computers local date will be used.
It also seems like my local summertime change, is applied globally.
Fiji is on Z+13 in my OpenCPN, Z+12 in real life, and the tides is an hour out. Same thing with Papeete, Tahiti, My OpenCPN says Z - 9, real life is Z - 10 and the tides are out by an hour. Same thing here, as long as you adjust your computer to the official timezone you will be right when you actually need the tide predictions.
The danger of armchair sailing in the cyberworld!

Worse is that some stations in NZ displays Z + 1, for example Bluff.

Thomas,

Did you compare also the Routeplan data with the Tide Graph data? At least for Suva, the Routeplan seems to be OK... except that I can not select FJT zone naturally...

The starting time was set by entering ">now", and using the resulting timestamp to start at first waypoint, not where I am now (many days enroute from there...).

Note that LMT times will not agree completely with neither UT nor FJT.

Re: Help / FAQ

Just a thought...I wonder if any North American computers are still screwed up by George Bush having changed Daylight Savings...there is a MS update to apply for this. Not having it might create some confusion as to local time versus the tide database...?
