This is just a SWAG (scientific wild assed guess). Perhaps you need to install the Mac driver for the BU-353. Try USGlobalsat Corporate

Hello Arwed,
*
Thank you for contacting USGlobalSat Customer Care.

Unfortunately, due to the specific version of the PL2303 Prolific Chipset used in the BU-353, it will not be compatible with Windows 8 & Windows 8.1 & Windows 10.
Although, just recently, we may have found a work around, please refer to this forum post: BU-353 with Windows 8 & Windows 8.1

If you're looking for a USB GPS Receiver that is fully compatible with Windows 8, Windows 8.1 & Windows 10,
we highly recommend the new BU-353-S4, which uses the new SiRF Star IV chipset that offers better performance, faster time to fix and better accuracy: USGlobalsat Corporate

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks.

Re: How to connect BU-353 to Windows 10?

Yes, installing the old driver and telling windows not to update the driver can work, but it was not worth messing with that all the time, so I purchased a new puck BU-343-S4 This was for a Win10 machine. This has been written up previously in a thread titled with "Windows 10" in it if there is any interest in searching.

How did you pull this off? I am trying to disable driver updating using the Group Policy Editor in Windows 10 but don't know which setting to toggle... I need this to work until I can get to a place to order a newer puck, please help.

Re: How to connect BU-353 to Windows 10?

It has to be done each time you start the machine. I was not interested in doing this all the time and bought a newer BU-353-S4 (years ago).
I have recently provided links in this forum, from a google search for how to do this. Find those or do your own search.

I then used the old puck, set in serial mode with software, as a dedicated GPS to feed position to my Standard Horizon DSC/VHF. It required wiring in a small 12vdc to 5vdc power converter.

Hello,

Put in place the old version of the driver
shutdown W10

Put BU 353 in place
Start W10,

Should be working(was working few years ago)

But as Rick wrote, buy a new BU-353 S4 is a better and easier solution.

Google this for several descriptions of a fix

PL2303_64bit_Installer

The installer worked for me.

The last one. Sorry I didn't have the link, just the downloads. Glad you found it.
