how to get/make maps from JOSM

as a bit of a side project, i have been playing with the idea of using OpenCPN (for Raspberry Pi) on my boat. i will generally be using it on large inland lakes in this area, but have found no charts. through my research, i was looking for maps for OpenCPN, i came across Open Sea Maps plugins for Java Open Street Maps editor. maybe i am going the wrong route, hence my struggle.
all i need is some sort of chart of inland lakes. my intent is to use the plotter while fishing. depth charts would be great, but i would be happy with just a topographical map. i tried GE2KAP, but i wasn't impressed with the detail. i would need to make a lot of little zoomed-in chart files to get any detail.

thanks in advance for any help.

How about making Kap files using one of the plugins? They would not have depths however. Have you tried using the Chartdownloader to download the Maine Charts?
Perhaps some of the larger lakes connected to the ocean are covered.

I just checked, and it only does Kennebec. I think it is creating Kap files.

Re: how to get/make maps from JOSM

I spent most of two days trying to figure it out and couldn't. I tried, iirc, three different toolchains. Let me know if you get it to work. KAP isn't a widely used format, and I was unable to find any open-source tools that are currently being maintained that can manipulate them.

How about grabbing a sonarchart from SASPlanet and stitching it into a GeoTiff?

Then use PhotoLayer_pi, a BETA plugin, and open the Tiff.

Instructions are here:

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...ayer#sasplanet

Make sure you use the WGS84 Lat/Lon format. I have not added a Mercator option yet (TODO).

Let us know how it goes.

Mike

The tif is attached if you want to play with PhotoLayer_pi.

apparently SASPlanet wont stitch a GeoTIFF file, and the photolayer plugin expects a TIF file format.

that's testing on the Windows version of OpenCPN.

Re: how to get/make maps from JOSM

Travis ...

Did you look at the screenshots in the OpenCPN manual?

I use GeoTiff and tif interchangeably when I mean a geotagged tiff image file. The file extension is .tif. (Tagged Image File Format).

Mike

Sorry, I should have said ... remove the .pdf file extension of the webb.lake.tif.pdf file. It can then be used with PhotoLayer in OpenCPN.

Travis ...

My SASPlanet version is SAS.Planet 160707.9476 Stable. Is this the reason for the missing GTIFF option?

I updated to 17.... and GeoTIFF is now an option. i will play around with it, and see. Thanks!

Re: how to get/make maps from JOSM

ok, when i export to a KAP, just a red-ish pink box is shown where the KAP should be. i have set the colors to 64, as recommended, and i refreshed the database, as well as trying a restart of OpenCPN.

any ideas?

Re: how to get/make maps from JOSM

ok, fixed the issue above. now i have it, though i will have to cruise the lake when my boat is finished to check accuracy. it looks a little distorted, but maybe it is correct. i will make a chart for my house location, and see if the chart matches my handheld GPS location (i will use it for the NMEA data, so it will be plotting from the same GPS data).
