Install problems on Windows10

I am running Opencpn v4.8.4 on a laptop with 64-bit W10 and have downloaded 4.8.8. When I try to run the install programme I get the following message "This app can't run on your PC. Contact the vendor"

I'm inclined to the idea that Windows doesn't like the file, but as usual it doesn't tell you why it doesn't want to run the programme. Running as Administrator makes no difference - same message. I have the same issue with my netbook/chartplotter running 32-bit W10 which gives the same message.

Has anyone any ideas?

Re: Install problems on Windows10

Are you running Windows 10 or Windows 10s. That s at the end means you can’t run any software not on Microsoft’s approved list.

Mike S...
About 80% of OCPN users are running Windows and I suppose most Win10, like me.
First time a OCPN installation on Win10 use to present a message like the shot below. On that specific message you have to click "More info" and then "Run anyway". Is it this you're talking about?
BTW: You may want to try the latest OCPN release, v 5.0? https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/info/downloads.html

It possible that Open CPN is only for32 bit not 64 bit.

Re: Install problems on Windows10

I have v4.8.4 running in 32-bit mode on my netbook used as a portable chartplotter and on my 64bit laptop for cruise planning at home. They both work fine. Just later versions that don't.

Re: Install problems on Windows10

The latest version of OpenCPN is version 5.0 for Windows® XP SP3/Vista/7/8/8.1/10. I downloaded and installed it on a computer running Win 10 64 bit two weeks ago and it works fine. Any reason why you are installing v 4.8.8?

Re: Install problems on Windows10

I started trying to upgrade when v5 was only beta , so chose 4.8.8 as it was then the closest version - the Installer programme gave this error. I tried v5.0 once it was became the latest version, but the installer programme still produced the error.

BUT, I have found a getaround!

I downloaded the installer directly to a friend's new W10 laptop and ran it successfully.

Then I copied the whole of the resulting install folder tree to a USB stick and thence to my 32-bit and the 64bit machines - bingo! it works fine on both systems.

Still don't know what's wrong with the installer programme, but no longer important.

Many thanks to all of you who made suggestions.

Let's hope we all get some sailing this summer and aren't still locked down in the autumn.

Mike.s..
Good you found a work around. The message as of your shot above don't look like Windows message? You don't happen to use a anti virus program other than Windows defender, do you? If so I'll say that's no need and please disable it for a new O install test.

Re: Install problems on Windows10

Win 10 has a couple of things that "shield" users from "terrible" programs.

Win +S
Type "SmartScreen"
App & Browser Control

If it is set to warn or block it will generate the highly informative

"This App Can't Run on this PC" popup

Set to off
