Install to a disk

My laptop is slow and the screen is not super bright. I am thinking about borrowing a better laptop and running opencpn from a disk. Is this possible? I know on my laptop I installed it on my "D:" HD partition, but it still puts some files on my "C:" drive. I would put my charts and everything on the disk (CD or DVD) if that would work.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Install to a disk

Have a look at the documentation, Portable OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage.
This option should work well for you.

Re: Install to a disk

Thomas, that was helpful, thanks. I actually installed it to a USB memory stick just fine except that it puts a few items in c:\programdata\opencpn. Is there a way to direct this location to my memory stick? I cant seem to find an ini file to edit.

Re: Install to a disk

Stargazer, it should not do that...write to the host computer...C:\program data\opencpn\ etc , I mean. You should find the ini file in the OpenCPN folder on your usb key....as to running her off a cd or a dvd, I haven't tried this, because I figure she will want to write an ini file and a log on it...

...are you sure you are running from the ".bat script"? or do you have a -p switch on a shortcut? you can't just double-click opencpn.exe on a usb stick. It Won't Be Portable, run like that...

wasn't running a bat file, I feel silly! I thought I had left those behind in my MSDOS days! Thanks, so far seems to run well on a usb drive.
