The flash disk seems to now be working as advertised and will be a nice fallback if the situation warrants. It does seem a tiny bit fragile to me, and twice I had to reformat and reinstall everything on it because it was telling me that it had exceeded capacity when I couldn't possibly have done that. I won't be relying on the disk in the next couple weeks at sea. It may all work itself out, though, as I learn what I can and can't do.

A nice thing about this project is that it led me to install Ubuntu on one of our netbooks. I installed it, and OpenCPN, copied over all the charts, route library, a mess of other programs, and had it operating with our GPS and AIS in a couple hours, if that. It seems very solid and will have no qualms about letting it lead us out of here.

Many thanks for the help. And especially to the captain of Libertalia and Hamish for hanging in there till the end.

Good to hear it worked out, you're also geeking it up by the sound of it

Admit I am terribly embarrassed to resurrect this, but I upgraded to 10.04 and installed OCPN on one of my netbooks. It took me a while to find where the program had been put because I admit it has been a while since I played with installing files on ubuntu.

I clicked on it, it twirled for a moment, then stopped.

Checking permissions, it told me I was not the owner.

Any suggestions on how I become the owner would be much appreciated.

In Karatsu, NW Kyushu, and oh-so-close to the typhoon that passed us by en route to Korea. An exciting morning.

No need to find an icon to click just to start OpenCPN. Just write
"opencpn" in a terminal and hit enter.

Tho find where OpenCPN (or any other program is), "which" is your friend.

$ which opencpn
/usr/local/bin/opencpn

Thanks Thomas, I guess the opencpn file that I found wasn't the right one. Which located the real file. Can't say I'm blown over by the new ubuntu, but the new opencpn is tres cool. Back on the water in a few days to try it out. cheers
