Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

Petter5,

it is enough now. You will not want to understand and so keep your mind for yourself please.

Last try: GPSD2IP means translated: GPS data to TCP/IP transmit. How to get the data from IP address tcp://192.168.1.70 port 11123 is up to the user. Anything is possible. You understand: ANYTHING like tcp, udp, telnet, netcat etc. and of course also gpsd if you point it to 192.168.1.70:11123.

Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

Gerard,

Please take a look at the setup from GPSIP direct to OPENCPN. Can you see if I am doing something wrong here? Thank you

Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

To test that your pc is able to see your iphone , you can use telent from a command window.

Be sure your gpstoip is running on your iphone, and then from a command window on yout pc:

Code:
telent 192.168.1.1 11123
You should now see the NMEA messages in the telnet window if your pc is able to connect to the iphone

Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

Thanks again Gerhard.

The telent returns a 'telent is not recognized as an internal or external command.

I did successfully ping the device - does this help?

Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

SergieBoy,

please do not follow people which does not know neither the GPS2IP tool nor have other network knowledge.
To get GPS2IP working you will have to configure it to your networking environment. Here is an example with a few pictures for my network. You will have other item numbers.

Go to Settings in GPS2IP and check first the iPhone IP Selection with "i" gadget at WiFi IP. Keep the shown IP address and activate WiFi IP.

Check the Socket number in Connection Method Socket. I use normally always 10110 because it is the standard for nautical devices. Change when needed and activate Socket.

Make other settings as shown in picture GPS2IP-2. I always use 1 second (1 Hz) for data transmit because this is the standard for GPS data.

My local network on the boat is 192.168.10.x. The iPhone therefor has 192.168.135 because it is part of my boat network which has a router. See pic GPS2IP-1 which shows one connection because I have configured OpenCPN as shown in pic GPS2IP-OCPN with IP 192.168.10.52 which is the IP of my computer.

Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

Gerhard and Peter,

Thank you both for all your assistance. I have it working - but only when connected over wifi. If I am operating remotely on the boat, without a wifi, I used to connect my iphone by cable to the laptop to receive the gps. With th iphone 5 however, it appears to not work. Any ideas how you would connect the two without a local wifi? Again thanks for all your help

The iPhone does not have any other network connection than WiFi. All iPhone models have no LAN connector!!!

Re: iphone 5S GPS to OpenCPN

Another free possibility to get GPS data from the iPhone is to use a Python script running on the computer and starting Safari on the iPhone. See here for instructions: Making your iPhone look like a NMEA GPS receiver with gpsd and WiFi or Bluetooth | spench.net

But there is something more needed then only a few network knowledge...

Perhaps it might work also with Bluetooth or USB.
