Issue w Dashboard erratic behavior

I recently updated my M1 MacbookPro to Ventura 13.5. Since then my dashboard loses SOG and COG readouts. The boat icon still updates my position when this happens, but the distance/direction vector disappears.

The NMEA debug log reads : $GPRMC,200845.000,A,4806.4627,N,12246.7705,W,0.00, 306.90,270623,,,A*72<0x0D><0x0A>
<GREEN>13:08:46 (/dev/cu.usbserial-10) $GPGGA,200846.000,4806.4627,N,12246.7705,W,1,09,1. 0,11.6,M,-17.2,M,,0000*5A<0x0D><0x0A>
<GREEN>13:08:46 (/dev/cu.usbserial-10) $GPGSV,3,1,12,18,66,286,43,29,55,133,39,23,37,206, 42,26,35,271,34*7C<0x0D><0x0A>
<GREEN>13:08:46 (/dev/cu.usbserial-10) $GPGSV,3,3,12,20,09,049,27,10,05,214,29,25,03,183, 24,27,02,309,*74<0x0D><0x0A>
<GREEN>13:08:47 (/dev/cu.usbserial-10) $GPRMC,200847.000,A,4806.4627,N,12246.7705,W,0.00, 306.90,270623,,,A*70<0x0D><0x0A>
<GREEN>13:08:48 (/dev/cu.usbserial-10) $GPGGA,200848.000,4806.4627,N,12246.7705,W,1,09,1. 0,11.6,M,-17.2,M,,0000*54<0x0D><0x0A>

Note that when the N and W coordinates are missing the Dashboard loses SOG/COG and the distance/direction vector.

The GPS receiver is a BU-353S4 quite new and seems to be operating properly. The NMEA debug readout is consistently green, with no errors recorded.

Finally, this behavior appears random. The Dashboard functions normally for approx.5-10 seconds, although the period constantly varies. Then the Dashboard suddenly loses SOG/COG for about the same period of time, although it occasionally drops out for 30 sec or so. I cannot discern a regular pattern of behavior.

Suggestions?

Re: Issue w Dashboard erratic behavior

Joel..
The RMC shown:
Quote:
$GPRMC,200845.000,A,4806.4627,N,12246.7705,W,0.00, 306.90,270623,,,A*72<0x0D><0x0A>
has no speed, SOG. Field 7 = 0.00.
Then Dashboard shows no COG since it's irrelevant wo speed.
The same of course for course predictor. No SOG no vector.

Re: Issue w Dashboard erratic behavior

The question is, what is causing the data stream to lose the gps coordinates, and more importantly, what can I do to resolve the issue?

Re: Issue w Dashboard erratic behavior

Joel..
First - I know really nothing about Mac and what Ventura 13.5 can possible imply. Others may have more to share.

Second - I should have studied the NMEA Debug window for example filtered to RMC to see how your data input is flowing. One could except it about every second. Also study if position is included in every message. (Similar to e.g. "GPRMC,200845.000,A,4806.4627,N,12246.7705,W...... ..")

Third - You are using the current OCPN, version 5.8.4, right?

Re: Issue w Dashboard erratic behavior

I am using the latest version of OCPN, Ventura, and the GPS driver. The Dashboard was operating normally when Ventura first came out, but a couple of updates ago, sometime last spring (2023), this erratic behavior started.

Yes, the data stream refreshes every 1 sec.

I'm assuming there is some glitch between Ventura and OCPN because the data stream from the GPS is steady and green. However, as stated above, for some reason the entries randomly fail to record the N & W coordinates. Naturally, that's when the Dashboard drops the SOG/COG & Distance/Direction vector.

I have disabled all plugins except for those that come with OCPN, but the problem persists.

When I reboot in safe mode OCPN will not run, and I get the below report:

System Integrity Protection: enabled

Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

@joelskellie Joelskellie. I would really like to know what caused this too. Is it a bad computer? You really should explain for all of us. Thankyou.
