Laptop Navigation

Hi Guys,

I know nothing about using a laptop for navigation but would like to learn. I have downloaded OpenCPN but know nothing about it other than that I need to buy a GPS receiver and plug it in via an NMEA cable.

I've tried plugging in my Garmin Nuvi 500 GPS which has all the Garmin charts for Australia on it but Garmin tell me that as soon as you plug the Nuvi in to a computer, it disables the GPS function???

Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Les

Les,
I assume the following: You should have loaded the AUS charts into OpenCPN already. The Garmin GPS should only provide your current position which will be displayed on the electronic chart.

It is important to set up the GPS parameter correctly (e.g. position and height of the antenna).
Don't forget to back-up your position when using GPS.

Have fun
Jens
