Linux Questions & Help

I have Linux 12.04LTS should I upgrade to 14.04LTS as suggested by the system? Should I do it directly or in smaller steps?

The Linux is running on my Win7x64 Laptop under Oracle VM Virtualbox Version 4.2.18 r88780 should I upgrade that? What is the best process to do this?

Re: Linux Questions & Help

How to update Opencpn and Plugins (the way I do it)
-----------------------------------------
UPDATE OPENCPN & BUILD A PLUGIN

Update the Program and Climatology_pi plugin* from opencpn-git*
1. cd opencpn-git
2. git fetch --all
3. git branch -v (shows *origin)
4. git branch -a (notes about changes)
5. git pull origin (can be used if you are not programming)
6. cd plugins
7. rm -r [plugin-name]_pi
8. git clone git://github.com/[path-to-plugin]/[plugin-name]_pi.git
(updates the plugin to the most current version)

Compile and Build the program**from opencpn-git/build
1. cd opencpn-git
2. cd build
3. cmake ../
4. make
5. sudo make install
6. This builds all the other plugins and opencpn and it should be the most current version.

1. Yes. 14.04 LTS is worth the upgrade. You will probably have to do it in smaller steps, I had to do that from an earlier version. The upgrade manager tool will guide you through it. The latest OpenCPN seems to be in the repos accessible from 14.04 and it's reasonably up to date including betas.

2. Generally speaking I would avoid upgrading Virtualbox except when you need to. If it's working fine then you don't need to. I have had issues in the past with certain functions inside the VM ceasing to work after upgrading Virtualbox. Sound and graphic related functionality seems to go a bit haywire after each version upgrade.
