MacBook-Charts not loading up

I have a MacBook from 2008 in an aluminium case with a 13.3" screen.
I also have a iMac from 2012 with 27" screen.
Both Macs are running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.5 ( I rebuilt the MacBook)
Both Macs operate normally i.e. MS Office, Internet, etc.

Open CPN for both Macs is Version 4.0.0 Build 2015-01-08.

The MacBook runs Open CPN - but does not load the charts.
I loaded Open CPN onto the iMac and it does load the charts.

I can confirm that the root directory for the charts is the same for both Macs.

Naturally I have tried to re-install Open CPN on my MacBook and tried different root directories, but without success.

I'm not sure where to go after this.

Can anyone assist please?

Regards

Re: MacBook-Charts not loading up

You seems to be an experienced Mac user and so you have installed OpenCPN correct I guess. New users of Mac OS X often opened only the dmg file without dragging its contented app to the Application folder and this does not work.
And of course you have pointed OpenCPN in chart settings to the folder where your charts are.

You may open the icon with the question mark of the toolbar in OpenCPN and you will see a window with a button called "Copy logfile to clipboard". Once done you may insert the clipboard contents here and we can see what is going wrong with your MacBook.

Gerhard

Please find attached to this post 3 x PDF documents detailing the log file from both the MacBook and the iMac, with the 3rd document detailing the differences between the two.

I've tried to analyse the differences, but I am not yet familiar with CPN to be the judge of what I saw.

Re: MacBook-Charts not loading up

Adrian....

I looked at the logfiles.
It seems that the Macbook is not finding the cm93 chart tree.

1. Do you see a yellow bar at the bottom of both screens? This is the chart selector bar.

2. Are you absolutely sure that the cm93 file tree on the MacBook is complete, including the few single files in the root?

3. You may try disabling OpenGL.

Good Luck

Re: MacBook-Charts not loading up

Hi Dave

On the MacBook: No yellow bar
On the iMac: There is a yellow bar.

Charts loaded onto the MacBook are the same as on the iMac.

Directory root is the same for both MacBook and iMac. Users/username/desktop/CM93_May2009

I've no idea how to disable OpenGL on a MacBook and though I have googled the question, I'm not seen any clear instructions that would allow me to do that.......and more importantly get me back to a default condition.

Bit of background: I have a colleague who runs Open CPN himself, and has done for some time. He has tried himself without success saying that "provided the directory is pointing to the chart folder, CPN should have no problem in reading the files contained".

His statement was born out when I then repeated the exercise on the iMac. It genuinely easy to do and caused no issues at all.

The MacBook was rebuilt by myself for the sole reason of using Open CPN and I have a 300Gb HDD with 4Gb of RAM. The only other applications loaded are MS Office. Other than that and the default applications that come with the OS, there is nothing else.

I'll wait a few more days and then if push comes to shove, I'll rebuild the MacBook and see how I get on. There is the possibility that the hardware is not up to the job. Having said that though, Open CPN does boot up.

Cheers
Adrian

Adrian...

Sorry I was not clear.

Disable OpenGL in OpenCPN only.

From OpenCPN main screen:
Settings tool (spanner) ->Display->Advanced->tick "Use accelerated graphics" OFF

Re: MacBook-Charts not loading up

Dave,

Thanks for your reply: Use accelerated Graphics was defaulted to Off. All the other radio buttons, under Options, were also off.

I have both the MacBook and iMac sitting together on my desk and booted up. Using the iMac as a datum - this is the Mac that is running CPN satisfactorily - I have gone through each of the 6 x set up options (Display through to Plugins) and cross referenced each tick and radio button.

I can confirm that they are the same, and from going through each of the menus and drop down boxes the "spanner icon" is really where all the set up options are. The rest are of an operational nature.

Regards
