Need a new Rasp Pi

What is the recommendation for a model to run on? Do you recommend a 4 or get a 3, and how much memory?

jbinbi..
Go for a RPi4. Faster than a "3".
OCPN don't use that much memory so a 4 GB will do but take 8 if affordable for other (multimedia) use.
The RPi 400 is a funny one if you need the compact keyboard solution. Works well.

Re: Need a new Rasp Pi

BTW:
The RPI4 is in general fastidious with power level.
If it meant for a boat installation I've found this converter very good since the 5V option can be adjusted to 5.2 V.
One link here but you can for sure find it closer.

Agree the 4 is the way to go if you want to run openGL. (the 3 will typically crash).

My only issue with the RPi 400 is that I don't think you can use any of the "hats" with it like the AIS hats etc.

Re: Need a new Rasp Pi

Thanks. I was just stunned to see a 4 w 8GB for $70. When I think back to the Pi I got a while back, it was not close to that price, maybe $25 or 30. But then again, I think it had 1Gb.

Where are you seeing that price? 4gb going for that here. 8gb $150-$200

Yes, the GPIO pins are there but you've to have the Hat outside behind the keyboard. Not nice but maybe doable dependent of the installation.

I've been on the wait list at adafruit for ages....probably chip shortages and then also zero COVID policy in China shutting down manufacturing.

Re: Need a new Rasp Pi

Yeah the prices really shot up.

I got two RPi 4 kits in 2018 or 2019 for $99 ea.

RPI 4 with 8GB was $75 in 2020.

If you just want to run OpenCPN you can use an old Laptop also.

My RPI's are at home now and I'm using my old Toshiba Satellite Laptop w/Windows 10 onboard as my chartplotter with OpenCPN (and AIS coming in thru USB adapter from my SH 2200 VHF)

Laptop Displaying Victron MPPT Controller info in photo but also has internet with iPhone hotspot if in Range and OpenCPN with AIS most anywhere

Re: Need a new Rasp Pi

maybe just use a chromebook? got a new touchscreen 14" last xmas for about 179. not sure if you can replace chromeOS with linux though to put opencpn on? (don't even suggest running android opencpn on it, most android apps on chromeOS are nowhere near what they are on phone/tablet)

Re: Need a new Rasp Pi

For the sake of simplicity I have bought a new RPI4 at ridiculour price. BOAT = Bring Out Another $Thousand.

I do hope it all works when I actually install it.

Unfortunately I cannot mirate the o-charts license, so it will still be the RPI for the Bahamas this year. No worries. Managed without the radar for several years now - couldn't source one at all with COVID.

What a crazy world we live in.

Thanks for all your advise.

Re: Need a new Rasp Pi

Buy the USB copy protection stick from O-charts. Then you can use the charts sets on every system.

It is possible the take a second chart set for this dongle from O-charts.

With the flatpak version of OpenCPN you all the plugins (64 bits only).
