Need Ipad help

I have OpenCPN working on a windows PC , with inputs from the AIS, Works great! But when I am sailing(engine off) it uses a lot of power!
I now have a new toy, an Ipad2 with GPS. As I can charge it from 12v( no need of the inverter) it is a lot less thirsty.
I have used it with mapping programs(car) with great success.
I have tried to download OpenCPN directly on to the Ipad with no success!
Will it not work, or am I doing something wrong?
Please reply slowly, as I am not computer literate!
Thanks

moggie...
Nope, it will not work, sorry. You have to use some other application that runs on an iPad.

Re: Need Ipad help

Not quite nope

Run OpenCpn on laptop
Install team viewer app on ipad and on laptop
Setup adhoc network on laptop
Team Viewer then dsplays OpenCPN on iPad with touchscreen use
You still have the power problem having to power laptop and ipad, but ipad will run quite happily for over 8 hours on batteries.

Re: Need Ipad help

Get yourself a netbook -- about $300-400 and it will use less than half the power of a full-size laptop.

Re: Need Ipad help

Try a dedicated charting/plotting/marine navigation app designed for the iPad, such as Navionics or iNavX. Depending on how often you wake-up the screen, you should get around ~8-9 hours of battery life.

Moggie, OpenCPN will not run on an iOS (read that to be Apple handheld device such as iPad, iPhone etc) device. You need something like iNavX, Navionics, iSailor or similar for the iPad. These range from $8-50ish USD. This is if you wish to ditch the laptop completely.

If you want to keep the laptop which WILL run OpenCPN then you need a different app from the app store. There are several which will allow you to control the laptop and see the screen. Are you using a charging cord for the laptop that would plug into a cigarette lighter in a car? (12v) if not that would help but not solve this problem.

The suggestion of changing the laptop to a netbook is a good one. If you don't want that expense then I'd ditch the laptop completely and just run iNavx.

What are you trying to use in OpenCpn? Are you using radar and AIS or just plotting?

Hopefully this was will make sense. If not you are welcome to PM me. I'm not a guru on either item but I understand each well enough to get by.

Here is a good website for you. http://www.inavx.com/

Hopefully your AIS receiver is iPad friendly.

Re: Need Ipad help

Thank's all, Yes I have just put ISailor on the Ipad, seems to work OK.
Guess I"ll stick to that when sailing, and the laptop when motoring or when the sun shines bright! Thank"s again for the help.
PS,Sailcruiser how do I get the AIS to talk to the Ipad, it has a normal USB outlet(different to the Apple)

I'm not sure. Which AIS receiver are you using or is it part of a radio?

Re: Need Ipad help

Hi,SC, it's the vesper unit, it has a normal USB out, when I plug it into the laptop it shows all the targets with track vectors, speeds, time to "impact", all sorts of good info, superimposed on the chartploter. I really don't think it will do this on the Ipad, But please prove me wrong! (I hope) Thanks for your time.

Moggie, that is something I know nothing about. However I can tell you what you probably need. (please check compatibility). You likely need an iPad friendly multiplexer. These are devices that take one or more data streams in and then output something the receiving device understands. (very basic definition I'm no engineer!) I've read about 2 but there may be more. I think Digital Yachts has one and the Brookhouse iMux. I have no experience with either yet. SC
