Re: New Grib Presentation

NOAA's switch to the FV3 model will be transparent to O, though it will need to be modified to use REFC.

HRRR is more work - O uses Mercator projection while HRRR and the RAP that it's based on are on a Lambert Conformal Conic grid. It's a bit of math to reproject, but maybe O uses GDAL or Proj.4 for this.

Last I checked ZyGrib / QtVLM hadn't yet implemented LCC though they know about it.

HRRR has been fairly accurate for racing and race planning on both the East and West Coasts of the US, though that's not its primary purpose.

Can z --> xygrib now select and download REFC? Saildocs?

Re: New Grib Presentation

Has anyone tried xygrib relectivity with our grib_pi and xygrib? They just added it as an option.

Re: New Grib Presentation

David Burch, from Starpath is asking what version of OpenCPN will run this new parameter REFC

He would like to make a video for using it. And would like to know which version is most appropriate and where to get it?

unreleased version

Missing a proper color table and can't request it, I don't know saildoc parameter name or it's not yet available, REFC isn't working :
Error: "REFC" is not a valid parameter code for this request

Re: New Grib Presentation

I just installed 5.0. Gribs seem to work fine for display purposes for my needs. Still figuring out Saildocs, Zygrib and Xygrib. The farthest we travel is a 500 km race so I only need three days or so. It works on Windows 8 desktop computer and Windows 10 laptop. However (and I'll post separately) the weather routing works on Windows 8 but I can't get it to work on Windows 10. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Re: New Grib Presentation

David Burch's email which has a presentation, and advice regarding the REFC.

Quote:
Thanks for that info. I looked through the links you sent but could not find any version newer than what i had that still showed the REFC, so i just used the one i had.

I recall there was some discussion at some point about how to get the GRIB data, so this answers that question i hope

PS… we are not late here. This has only been available for two days!

Re: New Grib Presentation

Good morning,
I have installed the recent OpenCPN 5.0 version, on Win7 professional PC.
Using inbuilt GRIB plugin, sent a grib request to Saildocs, marking in the request: Wind, Pressure, Waves, Wind Gusts.
Saildocs sent as reply two mails:
1. Grib file (with wind & pressure info only)
2. Error mesaage saying:
There was an error in the following command line:
WIND,PRESS,HTSGW,WVPER,WVDIR,GUST
("WIND,PRESS,HTSGW,WVPER,WVDIR,GUST" is not a valid command or document code).

Is there anything to worry about or correct on my side? in the plugin?
Thanks

Re: New Grib Presentation

Following my above experience with Saildocs, I have also tried to fetch grib file from Zygrib, using the Grib plugin, with the same request parameters ( Wind, Pressure, Waves, Wind Gusts).
I have received the user code from Zygrib site, and the plugin built the email message to Zygrib.
I have sent the request, (and got an answer from my outlook program that email was delivered).
However - no answer came back from Zygrib.
I have tried it again after two days with different area (admittedly, both defined areas were in a neighbouring parts of the Med) and new code - similar negative result.
On the other hand, I easily got a grib file directly from Zygrib website and watched it on OpenCPN.
Thanks for any comment!

Just tried it on a win10 with thunderbird installed as a mail client, seems fine.

My outgoing email to Saildocs looked like this:
<send GFS:40N,37N,18E,22E|0.25,0.25|0,3,6..48|=
WIND,PRESS,HTSGW,WVPER,WVDIR,GUST>

And the data for the following parameters after PRESS (i.e. HTSGW,WVPER,WVDIR,GUST) did not come with the GRIB file.
I will send another request with WIND and PRESS only to see what comes back.

Hmm, just tried that , seems to work OK here on Opencpn5 , wave height, direction, period & gusts data showing up?
