NMEA WPL sentence support?

Support of the sentence is mentioned, I see it in the monitor window, but it seems ignored everywhere else...

This is the sentence that starts with $GPWPL

I tried last stable and RC versions for Mac. The data comes from APRS (AIS like) from a HAM radio. I would like to plot those targets.

Is there a NMEA parser guru out here?

tnx,
Nick.

Re: NMEA WPL sentence support?

Nick,

the good notice is that the $WPL message is already recognized and parsed in OpenCPN.

So it's "just" necessary to plot those "waypoints" or "POI"s in the case of your APRS locations.

You might place a feature request perhaps

Re: NMEA WPL sentence support?

Thank you Hubert,

How to place a feature request? There is a range of targets that can be plotted, incl. DSC (emergency), ARPA/MARPA (radar) etc. and they all work much like AIS targets, i.e. they normally move. Would you know if any of those are supported already, or is it only AIS targets?

ciao!
Nick.

Re: NMEA WPL sentence support?

Nick,

an answer with respect to the DSC targets (and other related topics) you will find in your on-line manual (the "?" icon) under
advanced features | AIS

You will find as well extended documentation about marks and waypoints in the manual.

Creating a mark, waypoint or POI from received $WPL sentences would be a new feature - perhaps those might be placed automatically into a separate layer. Just an idea.

A feature request can be created in Flyspray, the bug tracker for OpenCPN:
OpenCPN::Tracker All Projects: Tasklist
Registering is required - just takes a minute.

I created a feature request in flyspray:

And I uploaded some example NMEA input.

In the meantime I'll try to feed this tomy Furuno 3D plotter and see what happens

Re: NMEA WPL sentence support?

Nick,

your request sounds similiar to request. If OpenCPN parsed a $WPL sentence should it draw the waypoint and navigate to it?
Thanks,
Max

Re: NMEA WPL sentence support?

"Navigate to it" - no, drawing as a waypoint/POI- yes

In the mean time I completed the NMEA 0183 feeds back to my plotter. I checked out the AIS feed but the other one, from an old mux, I only checked in the port monitor and never on screen.... will do so today and report here. I'll also check if the plotter bridges it onto NMEA 2000.

About a GOTO... when setup as a waypoint, you can always do a manual GOTO I assume? There can be many WPL sentences received from many targets or whatever is sending them.

ciao!
Nick.
