NOAA Charts

OK, so I downloaded the latest version of OpenCPN, then went to NOAA to get the ENC charts for Florida. when I downloaded and unzipped the "Florida" file, 85 individual file folders were created, each file folder containing several text documents. I then created a master folder and moved the first of the 85 folders to the master folder. after i pointed OCPN to the master folder, a chart of Florida appeared on the screen. here are my questions...

1 - the chart on the screen doesn't look complete. do i need to move all 85 folders to the master folder?
2 - the font is also very large when the chart is zoomed out. i tried the tools, font tab but didn't change

thanks for any help you can provide

Randy

Re: NOAA Charts

Have you done a Force Full Database Rebuild? Look for the check box on the Chart tab under Tools.

Re: NOAA Charts

Just add the master folder that contains the 85 folders to the Available Chart Directories. OpenCPN will search the subfolders during the Rebuild.

Re: NOAA Charts

Randy...
If you have just one chart in what you call "master folder", it's pretty obvious you see just that one chart, unless by "incomplete" you mean something else. There are 86 ENCs in my FL_ENCs.zip, each in it's own folder under ENC_ROOT - to see all of them, simply point OpenCPN to ENC_ROOT. Way more in the manual.

Re: NOAA Charts

Thanks for the help guys. the "ROOT" folder under the zip folder doesn't sow up in the "available chart directories" for some reason. I was going to do that first but its not available. That's why i created a mater folder and moved the 85 sub folders into it. I just tried the data base rebuild and the chart looks the same. no depths on the charts.

Thanks again, Randy

Randy

Use the Add Selection button to get the master folder to show in the Available Cart Directories window.

I am assuming that you unzipped the files.

I use the RNC charts, not the ENC's. For Florida try the USCG District 7 charts ... 380 of them!

Re: NOAA Charts

I know it might be posted somewhere, but is there any reason not to run my charts from a CD rather than loading them on the computer and are there any disadvantages? Is there anything special to do? Thanks.

Re: NOAA Charts

The reason that comes to mind is speed, or lack of it to be more precise. Nothing special to do, just give it a try.

Re: NOAA Charts

Thanks, I suspected that and wonder if they will load that much slower. I guess I will have to play with it. Chuck

I've put in some code for the 3.0RC release (coming out maybe today or in a day or two) that will:

1 - Limit the font size to reasonable values for NOAA ENC city names.
2 - Make chart font user selectable in the fonts tab, and have NOAA ENC Texts scale accordingly.
