o-charts raster charts freeze on RPI

Zooming in on a raster chart in a new location causes the RPI 3 to freeze and become totally unresponsive, requiring a hard reboot.

This is now reproducible for me:

Plugins: o-charts with Explorer raster charts (south Bahamas)
NOT dashboard plugin

Start with the chart zoomed on the raster chart to the boat (ours is at Lee Stocking island) and autofollow turned OFF

Close OpenCPN and the open it up again so it starts with the boat and the zoom at the same point with the same settings.

zoom all the way out to an overview (not necessary to go all the way out to CM93, but it doesn't hurt)

click somewhere else a good distance away from own boat on the overview to bring that location to the middle

zoom all the way in again using the - (minus) key on the keyboard or the bottom right zoom in/out buttons with the mouse. At each keypress wait for the hourglass (if there is one) to go away, and for the display to appear to be settled on the new zoom level. Then keypress again.

At some point the system freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to mouse movements, mouse clicks or keyboard presses. Waiting a number of minutes does not help. Eventually one has to turn off the power and reboot it.

This does not happen on the Windows 10 laptop. Also does not appear to happen with the o-charts plugin disabled (and therefore, obviously, not using raster charts).

The move to a different location appears to be part of this. Zooming in and out in the same area is not a problem, perhaps because the images are cached somewhere? It does, however, happen when one has sailed to a new location and then tries to zoom in on the new area. As I said, to me it seems to suggest that the re-rendering of the raster image overwhelms the poor little RPI system.

This is a big problem as it happens just when one is trying to zoom in to examine a new area, for example the entrance to a channel at which one has just arrived. On one occasion I had to heave to while waiting for the RPI to reboot.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: o-charts raster charts freeze on RPI

Seems to be specific to the RasPi.
Walked through your recipe with the same oeRNC set (Far Bahamas, pre o-charts PI) and the o-charts PI.
macOS 12.2.1 on a macMini M1. OCPN 5.6.1 and o-charts pi 1.0.10.0

Sorry, yes, didn't make it clear that this is NOT a problem on my Windows laptop.

Can you play with OpenGL on/off?
Might be that the RasPi will slow down considerably with OpenGL off, but just to try to get some additional hint.

Interesting! I just tried it with OpenGL OFF and did NOT have the problem.

I will experiment with that left off and see what happens.

Re: o-charts raster charts freeze on RPI

Well, it seems that with OpenGL off the raster charts are working.

Then once we leave the Bahamas I guess we will have to turn it back on again for the vector charts.

Not tidy, but manageable.

Thanks
