O Setup-GPS, AIS, Hwy Display

I am a new user to OpenCPN, and still have a lot to learn. I have searched the Forum but found nothing to help me.

1) How can I use GPS and AIS on the same NMEA stream/COM port?
I have tried setting AIS to say, COM4, then GPS to share AIS. Nothing comes up.

2) When following a route, the Highway display text, COG, Bearing, etc is in about 4 point green font. How do I change it?

3) My Furuno depth sounder puts out Speed and Depth, corrected for offset. O shows the depth from transducer. Why? SOB shows the adjusted depth.

Thanks

1. Sounds like the correct way. Check your settings again, check if you get any output in the NMEA Stream window. If not, show us the last run from your log file. (See installation manual for how to accesslogfile)

2. For historical reasons the two fonts for the active route window have names starting with "Console"

3. O shows whatever comes in the NMEA Stream. Check if you can reconfigure your NMEA Out from the Furuno.

1. What baudrate are you using? GPS and AIS usually differ from each other. If that's the case, this is not going to work unless you can set both to the same baudrate.

Many (most?) AIS receivers have a GPS input so that the data streams can be merged. This means you can still use a single port on the PC for both sets of data, at what I think is a de facto standard 38400 baud rate.

Thanks to all for the responses.

Are there two depth sentences?

The AIS does indeed merge the NMEA stream from the GPS and Depth sounder, all at 4800Bd. There is no NMEA stream in the window. I will now read up on how to get the log.

Re: O Setup-GPS, AIS, Hwy Display

I sorted out the font situation, but the AIS eludes me. I have an NMEA stream at 4800Bd which SOB correctly interprets. I have tried turning off GPS and just using AIS on the COM port.. However even when there are targets, Ocpn does not detect them. Unfortunately, I can't monitor the NMEA stream going to the AIS port to see if it is getting the stream.

Also having problems with Ocpn shutting down the GPS COM ports, requiring a reboot.

AND, many BSsOD! 4 in one day!

Your AIS data stream should be 38400.

Use NavMonPC prior to OpenCPN to avoid the GPS problem. This has been discussed at length on this forum previously.

Good luck,

Terry

Re: O Setup-GPS, AIS, Hwy Display

Thanks Terry,

I downloaded Navmonpc the other day after seeing your post to another thread.
Set up the virtual COM port OK and tried it with SOB first. Guess what? BSOD again.

Regarding AIS @38400, that would explain why everything stops when I put AIS on the COM port. The GPS, depth sounder and AIS are all daisy-chained @4800. I will try Navmonpc again with a virtual port on 38400.

Another thing while I have your attention: O has now restarted from scratch twice now. I get the Welcome screen, no charts, no preferences loaded. All-in-all a PITA.
