One Wolf problems with O

One wolf,

noaa enc and rnc are fine. Information about the way you use these charts might help. How many charts are you trying to handle, the entire eastern seaboard at once? Do you use Chart Groups? Have you rebuilt the database completely recently?

How do you have your charts setup. Are you using reasonably sized chart groups?
What exactly is your computer and graphics card and how much memory?

Re: One Wolf problems with O

Thank you so much for this.

I have them on the mode where they automatically change as I zoom in and out so that I'm always seeing the highest detail chart for the center of where I'm looking. At least I think that's the case - I recall setting it up that way long ago and it appears to still do that. Occasionally I click one of the green (ENC) or blue (RNC) bars at the bottom to force a particular chart.

I have all of the north carolina NOAA charts loaded up. I do not use groups - all one group.

I use OpenCPN to download my tracks, waypoints from my Simrad unit and then I use those to create and edit routes and add details to waypoints and then I load all those back up into Simrad. If there is a better GPX editing map tool out there, i haven't found it, but that doesn't mean there isn't one I've just been using OpenCPN for nearly a decade (or maybe over a decade) and find it to be solid enough for my purposes.

I thought I rebuilt the chart databases the other day when I downloaded the latest set from NOAA but I just did that again now and I have to say I think it's performing better - so perhaps that was my issue. I will report back after some more use.

Thanks again

I don't know your computer power but I think running NC charts should not be a problem. I would suggest adding chart directories to your ENC North Carolina Charts and a separate one to RNC North Carolina, and then make Chart Groups for ENC and RNC. Then you can easily pick which set to use.

It will reduce the number of charts being handled. The other question is how many routes and waypoints are being shown?

There is a big difference between having access to a lot of chart and route data and actually showing it.

Also whenever I upgrade to a new version I generally end up rebuilding the entire chart database for one reason or another.

One simple test is to copy away the navobj.xml file. This contains all of your tracks, routes, waypoints, etc. So don't lose it, you probably want to back it up anyway. But I have found that when it gets "too large" it can cause the kinds of problems you are having. And it is easy to test. Just remove all the navobj.xml (there may be navobj.xml.1, .2, etc.) files and put them someplace safe that OpenCPN doesn't know about. Then run OpenCPN, it will create a new, empty navobj.xml.

If that solves your problem then you need to prune navobj.xml, usually it is old tracks that are taking up all the space and eating memory. If it doesn't work then just put the files back and you've only lost 5 or 10 minutes.

Thank you, good thoughts. I often export all my w/r/t and then delete them in the app, like just before I important my mfd data, but deleting that XML file might me a good idea.

Computer horsepower is not an issue - Lenovo T560, 64-bit, 32Gb, SSD etc.

There is no navobj.xml file in my OpenCPN folder or subfolders. In fact a search of my laptop finds it nowhere. Thoughts?

Under Windows you might need to enable the option to show hidden or System directories.
Windows File Explorer --> Directories --> Options --> view

When you do are at this panel take the opportunity and disable "Hide file extensions for known data types". For your security...
One should see what type of file you have under your fingers before clicking it.

In case of Windows the OpenCPN data live at C:\ProgramData\OpenCPN by default.

Is this an OpenCPN forum or a Howto-Using-Computers forum?

Sometimes. C:\ProgramData\opencpn\navobj.xml

Also just try making a new route, closing Opencpn and then searching.

Found it, deleted it. Still the same issues. I uninstalled everything, started from scratch. No help.
