Open 3.2.2 Crashes on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

Hi
Is anyone getting problems like me.

2 x 3 hour trips produced 6 crashes.(all requiring computer reboot)

3 of these crashes took me through the welcome/warning screen you see after a new install.
In these 3 instances all settings were lost and O had zero's in all user variable fields.
1 occasion the notice that opencpn.log would be saved as .log.log

Multiple track lines seen on 1 occasion where the boat was shown to be returning back and forth along the very near same track line.(attached)
As expected the distance covered and speed achieved is just ludicrous.

This would appear at a glance to be GPS error, but till changing to this new computer and OS, the master GPS has been proven to be reliable.
So next trip time to swap over GPS sources between computers and prove master GPS source.

I'm also getting media player crashes but none of these cause the computer to lock-up, and its just a simple case of closing the application, and restarting.

So
Computer?
OS?
I'm at the point of wanting to revert back to 32 bit in an attempt to eliminate theories as I never had a problem with it.

redog....

It is unusual for a user-space program to crash the OS in linux.
When it crashes, is the OS dead?

Does it crash just sitting there, or does it need to be underway and tracking? Does it crash with tracking turned off? Does it crash with dashboard turned off?

I wonder if running OpenCPN under ddd (debugger) would give a useful stack backtrace on a crash.

The track stuttering error has been seen before, but not yet debugged.
If you have this jerky track saved in your system (in navobj.xml), perhaps you could post it here for study. Do all those incorrect segments going down to the southeast all terminate at the same point? Anything special about this point?

Also, there may be something useful in the opencpn.log file.

Dave
Lets step this through in pieces.
I just had it crash whilst replying to you and lost everything I had written.
I was running under ddd and as in the past with a full lockup no details got saved.

1 Jerky track.

"The track stuttering error has been seen before, but not yet debugged.

Southeast points are random and generated by system.
Not a previously saved waypoint etc.

I have posted 2 tracks, 1 from each computer of the same trip.
Also previous post on this problem here.
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1234928
No crashes on this trip also 6 hours long.

Having trouble uploading .log files.
What format is preferred?

Answer to crashes I need to get my head around and will post here later.

On the crashes:
When you crash under ddd, do you still have control of ddd GUI console? If so, we need to see the screenprint of Status->Backtrace tab.

Thanks

Re: Open 3.2.2 Crashes on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

So you just installed 12.04 amd 64. Have you do downloaded all updates?

Quote:
$sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I suppose that you have downloaded the official OpenCPN package?

Please try the version in nohal's repository:
https://launchpad.net/~opencpn/+arch...ise1_amd64.deb

The official version is compiled with Ubuntu version 12.10, while Nohal's OpenCPN versions all are compiled with the correct Ubuntu versions.

Re: Open 3.2.2 Crashes on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

Already up to date with all packages and using nohal's ppa.

Downloaded the file in the link you provided and reinstalled.

O crashed whilst I was replying to you, I'm a slow learner I lost everything I had written again.

This is a new computer installed with U12.04 64 bit xmass 12 and all versions of O since then have produced crashes.
Other programs have crashed but not locked up the computer like O does every time.
Install did have a failing with no sound coming out of the earphone jack.

My gut feeling is to format and install 32 bit.

But in the interest of improving O I could reinstall 64.(I don't rely on this comp for home use)

With a clean start we might see some improvement.

Suggestions please before I go down that road!!!

Re: Open 3.2.2 Crashes on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

Does it make any difference if you replace your AIS Radar plugin with the latest version 0.96, instead of your version 0.92?

Download opencpnplugins from SourceForge.net

There have been troubles earlier on, with this plugin.
Also if this does not work, try to totally remove this plugin ( from
/usr/lib/opencpn ).

Re: Open 3.2.2 Crashes on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

Two more things. Have a look at this page
Help the Developers Finding Bugs | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Check if you are using ddd the described way.
Also read about using gdb towards the end of the page. Try gdb and see if you can catch anything. Try to keep the comandline window on top of O when running.

Your graphical driver....is it updated with the latest from Intel, or are you using Ubuntus default driver.
Try to run O without OpenGLmode.
Run O by starting from the command line like this

Quote:
$opencpn -no_opengl
and report back.

Have upgraded plugin and running O.
AIS plugin is not now and has not been enabled for past crashes.

I have in the past removed all plugins from /usr/lib/opencpn and still had crashes.

So thoughts are plugins not the cause.

Dave & Thomas

2: on the crashes
I have managed to get it to crash just sitting there and underway.

Everytime I have used ddd I have lost control of the computer completely so no backtrace is available.

I think I have tried all combinations,
Dashboard off and disabled
Tracking off and disabled
All plugins removed from /usr/lib/opencpn
OpenGL on and off

I have 2 older computers running U 12.04 32 bit and O 3.2.0
Also 1 computer running U12.04 32 bit and O 3.2.2

I cannot duplicate crashes on any of these 3 other machines and cannot fault O in anyway.

Am currently running under Thomas's suggested gdb and have upgraded AIS plugin.

On Thomas's question of graphics driver,
"No proprietary drivers are in use on this computer"
So ubuntu default drivers must be the answer.

Waiting!!!
Gotta luv computers.

4 days with no crash since up grading AIS plugin.
Also 1 kernal upgrade applied.

No mobile testing yet, 4 days has been stationary at kitchen table.

Just to clarify I had never removed the plugins from folder on 3.2.2, only previous versions.

Looking good thanks for the help.

Re: Open 3.2.2 Crashes on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

Still getting crashes so upgraded to 3.3.604.

Unfortunately this version crashes as well.

Problem seems to be whilst routing.
I can however speed up the crash by playing VLC media player.
(Also have identified MINI DLNA as a means of expediting a crash)

Attached screen shot raises 2 observations

1 Note in the sound window there are 3 instances of O playing his bells.
Each time the bells are played another instance appears and never disappear.
All other applications playing sound only ever appear once.(not shown here but observed)

2 Notice some of the satellites numbers are duplicated and show at differing strengths.

I have been following bobofthenorths thread on crashes on a windoz OS and just out of frustration have tried anything suggested there, all to no avail.
