Open CPN and GPS compatibility

I have just installed Open CPN on Windows 8. I can not get it to recognize my GPS (BU-353). I followed all of the instructions, still no luck. I see that there is a work around by installing "Xport" but it says that the product is no longer available.

I don't believe that the problem is with the GPS as I am able to get it to work with Polar View.

I had a similar problem on Windows 7 except that it would sometimes work and sometimes not. On a few occasions, it crashed the computer.

I love this product and desperately want to get it up and running.

As far as I remember, the older editions of BU-353 are (maybe were) not supported by Windows 8. Have a look at http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...8-a-91845.html where it looks like this topic was sufficiently beaten to death.
